Charms

Charms no longer do what they were intended to do as it is, I don't see any reason to add to that.
 
Selling in-game benefits for RL money is one of the things that this server has always avoided like Dark Rot. It's one of the aspects that many of us (including donators) like about the server. You can progress based on what you put into the game, not what you have in your bank account. This makes special benefits like moving charms for donators unattractive, and certainly the outright selling of moving charms for money.
 
Charms are our major plat sink. Allowing them to be transferred mitigates their effectiveness as a plat sink. The price floors added recently already hurt the charms ability to sink platinum - we are not about to give up their efficacy completely.
 
Out of curiosity what do you see as their intent?

Their intent was to take money out of the economy. That worked just fine for awhile, then people made money and farmed things just for the sake of buying a charm, which then defeats their purpose. It's not "taking money out of the economy" if people are making that money just for a charm and little else. If anything, it's causing people to bring money into the economy.

do you mean, charm farming is bringing money into the economy and that this is a bad thing? If so wouldn't it be better to alleviate some of the need for people to farm another charm and thus reduce even more money being brought into the economy?

Being able to trade charms amongst your characters would alleviate much of the desire for the high end players to repetitively farm the same items over and over (as they are doing the bulk of bringing items onto the market). I don't think the devs like it when piles of high end items are repetitively dumped onto the market and the price is driven down to a very low value. I thought this was why price floors were implemented in the first place. Shouldn't we avoid furthering this habit?

Could you elaborate on specifically how price floors "hurt the charms ability to sink platinum?" I'm not seeing a connection.

These two sentences don't really jive. If someone is farming money just for a charm the money is spent on the charm and is removed from the economy, so it can't also be brought into the economy. I get what you are saying, but money from raids and any other money generating activity that a player would do in any event also make up a portion of the money someone spends buying a charm so some money is being removed.

I'd say that the most important function charms really serve is in imparting value to in-game currency. Otherwise money would be only be valuable as a component of aug crafting and as a way to get reagents.
 
I think what Woldaff means is that before, you would farm large items to sell to players who have liquid cash. Then, after you get your 560k or 1.2mill pp together and buy a charm, all of that earned liquid pp would be out of the system. Now, items are farmed just to be sold to a vendor, or, if sold to a player, the items are then later scrapped into cash themselves. This just makes more money in the economy instead of getting rid of it.

I always thought that raising the sell prices for items was a bad thing for the economy, and a good thing for the players who farm. I do find it interesting that the charms were meant to get rid of platinum. In the process, many things have changed to adjust to the in-game economy.

It was good for the economy in a way since it addressed the problem of items being far too cheap for their actual value. It was bad in that it did indeed bring more cash into the economy. A fix for the original problem (arguable as to how much it would fix compared to the current solution) without this bad side effect would have been bind-on-equip WITHOUT unbind and higher vendor value.

I noticed that too, but didn't want to post it as I felt it would divert attention away from my other statements that I feel people are already having some level of difficulty understanding.

People farming for charms have earned enough money that spending more than market value on items is fairly trivial, thus spreading that money out into the economy, and inflating prices. Not to mention people who decide to farm for a charm but give it up for any number of reasons.

Allowing charms to be spread out among accounts is also a bad idea, as that stops people from buying a second (or third etc) charm in the first place, and some people really do buy charms just because they have the excess money to do so (some tradeskillers)

If tradeskills actually offered something meaningful past a certain tier then we wouldn't have such a huge, massive dependency on one single type of item, and money would be spent on or earned for multiple different things, not just 80% of all money at the high end being made with the end result of buying a charm.

If the item/plat is looted for the sole sake of it funding a charm, then yes, it does.

That is very incorrect. A lot of items used to sell for nothing or less than 100pp. With the changes, looting items does mean that money is brought into the system. People are just trying to explain that without charms, people would not be farming as hard if at all.

People used to farm items and then sell them to lower end players who just had cash. That way, the liquid money would leave the system. With item prices being inflated by 100-1000%, it caused more money to be put into the system instead of taking it out of circulation.

Edit: I agree with what you are saying, Stope, that being able to swap charms around would stop players from farming and putting more money in circulation. However, it really isn't about that, and it is about having to farm more than once if you want the item more than once.

That is not now, we are in a different system now. The dynamics of the economy are now different.

Because the game is not what it used to be, I would like to restate that my statement is still true.

It's not like charms are magically cheaper now. Their prices are the same they have always been. I don't see what is so complex about this.

So 2007, supreme charm buys for 1,200,000
Then in 2009, a very gloom day, where the factory line just isn't what it used to be, under the despot that goes by the name of "wiz", a supreme charm buys for... wait for it... wait for it... 1,200,000.

SOUND THE ALARM!

LOSS OFF EFFECTIVENESS!!!

Instead of taking off 1.2 million pp, we are taking off 1.2 million pp!!!!
