I don't believe shaman has lost it's edge.
Their slows are the best, mostly because yes, they are diverse, but they are still going to be less resisted on slows, which is a plus (and on a raid, you want slow to land fast, and let's not forget AA slow). I don't see shaman's role as a 'slowing' class. I always considered that a bonus. Shamans can choose almost any role, and do it quite well. Pad healing on raids/groups, dps on raids/groups, very needed buffs, and they can hold their own being the main healer for most tanks almost as well as a druid or a cleric. Not to mention their insane mana regeneration helps them pretty much excell at all of these things.
