As for class balance these days, judging by /who all s which I take from time to time when I am bored, the class numbers run something like this: highest number of to lowest number of
shaman
magician
druid
enchanter
monk
cleric
ranger
warrior
shadow knight
wizard
beastlord
rogue
necromancer
bard
paladin
Does not include ANONs and Roleplayers of course. The numbers aren't too far apart except for bards and paladins which are quite lower than any other class. Bards likely because their songs loop a horribly irritating conjuration sound and lightshow (and most players like to play with spell effects/sounds on) and paladins because, well, ah...virtue is in decline these days perhaps?
Id say most in demand for group needs are clerics followed by warriors.
Well, for starters, paladins are slightly different than on live. When I say slightly, I mean quite a bit. Yes, they are still a hybrid, but they have been tuned to focus mainly on undead. They are the only ones who can crit undead, do extra damage (I think, been too long) to undead, and in general get spells to help fight undead.
Rogue numbers are declining from the new heat system. Yes, while it makes it more realistic, it also adds to the difficulty, but then again, there were TONS of rogues before because of backstab.
Beastlords are a weird little class, and kind of tricky to master, which is why their numbers are fairly low.
Wizards (which I am) are great for DPS, but well, we're so fragile, we make glass look durable! Well, early on anyways. Once you get into your 50's, you get a good self-only rune spell, so it's a little better.
Lots of Shaman because they are very versatile, and their buffs and debuffs are ALWAYS needed. Clerics are the primary healers for raids. Druids can do quite a bit too, depending on what zone you're in, as they are most effective outdoors.
Magician and enchanters are popular because they are a pretty easy class overall to play. Especially magician. You get to have at least one pet (enchanters can have two I think), then you factor in that enchanters can mezz stuff to stop combat, and magicians can summon pretty much anything.
Monks can feign death, so it can save your life, a lot.
Warriors are pure tanks. They can eat TONS of damage, and walk away, where others would fall. The biggest issue is though, that they aren't really GREAT tanks till after like 75AAs (so I've been told) when they get a lot of their good traits, and they also are fairly 1 dimensional (eat damage).
Rangers are nice because they have some useful buffs and can attack from afar with arrows, or up close with swords. The main issue is the fact that they are fragile for a hybrid.
Shadow Knights can FD, and summon a pet skeleton and a few other neat things, and aren't a bad option for a new player. Be aware though that they suffer the same way as other tanks (don't really shine till you get a decent amount of AAs).
Anyways, hope that was helpful. Pick a class you think will be fun, because if you DON'T enjoy playing a certain class, you'll HATE going and raiding with it, which is what this game is all about.
