Hopefully I'm not getting myself into trouble by asking this, but what did all these people do to get banned? I heard they were cheating, but how can you cheat in SoD? I guess I always thought the cheaters and hackers kept to themselves rather than form fairly successful raiding guilds hehe.

They were using macroquest, a client that wraps into the game client and takes advantage of several issues of the game's design. Basically, a lot of the restrictions you have in game are client side because it would be really inefficient to have them server side.
I'm not sure exactly what it does but based on my understanding of the client, it probably injects assembler opcode modifications into the existing clients allowing you to over ride its restrictions. It also sniffs and interprets the packet flow with the server. These packets contain certain key information that would make play easier. In fact, the reason for the need to refresh is because of a encryption keying mechanism the vendor built into the client to prevent the use of tools like mq and others.
One thing to consider, ANY program that runs on your machine and wraps into your client is detectable. It will change your client behavior, and probably your network stack behavior as the sniffing function may force the stack into promiscuous mode. These anomalies are highly deterministic. Also, naturally the program will run in taskmanager which is how most game companies detect this now, as well as its signature in the execution stack.
But as far as its use, I think the devs were probably shocked that the number of users was so small since the use of these clients is pretty rife in the game, particularly by serious raiding guilds. So part of what your are seeing is a carry over of bad habits developed from playing a game that is mostly un-admined.

I understand you are completely clearing the database from the banned chars (not accessible via fomelo anymore) and I understand why. However, wouldn't it be good to create a "dummy" lvl 1 placeholder? At least for the well known people?
What if in 6 monthes a totally random guy creates a char called Delyn for example. He'll have a full bag of rocks on the back before he knows, just from choosing this name.
