SoD character blog to create some atmosphere

I really like this Idea. You may make me make my own on one of my new duo's. It'll be good to look back on it when you max level and look back on the memories of your character :).

Ahhhh Nostalgia.

By the way, if more of us set up such blogs, it would be fun to set up a planet :)

Like Planet Ubuntu for example:

http://planet.ubuntu.com/

Planets collect all articles from all blogs they know and republish them as a single page and a single RSS feed. That way, people can get a feel for what all of us write while reading just one single page.

Some people like that sort of thing, some people don't. I guess we'd only have to start discussing it once there are four or five blogs, though, otherwise there won't be that much for the planet to show.

I will happily dole out proportional fame to those most active in this. What a great way to promote the server in a way that actually gives people relevant first hand information on what its like to play.

Here's an example of how a planet works:

Pay no attention to the look, that's one of the default themes that ships with Planet Venus. We can change the look any time.

I took the liberty to include those character blogs I could find in this thread, just as an example.

Should I try to adapt the look to SoD, do we want to keep this sort of thing? I could use some CSS files from the SoD main page as starting points. I can run the planet on my server (you could make planet.shardsofdalaya.com point at it for example) or I can just finish a theme and hand you the Venus config file and the theme files once I'm done.

Venus seems to run on anything that can run Python and xsltproc.

This is awesome! I don't know how much work would be involved with this project, but it has my vote.

This is very neat, I enjoyed reading the blog. It's always fun to see someone new discover and enjoy your work. :)

/waves at wiz.
Im really enjoying this thread. If I was able to string together more then half a dozen sentences when sober or drunk Id write as well.
Instead I'll live this through the words of others and just link it all over the place.

Providing management has no issues with this, I have no problem helping you with the CSS / theme from our main site. I think its a great idea. Once the admins have given the yes or no, please look me up in irc as Aomi anytime.

I don't see an issue with it, but since I'm retired and all you should ask Wold/Allie.

Go ahead Aomi. As long as we keep our grubby hands off the content so it stays unbiased =p.

This really could be helpful promotion wise.

I enjoy what little writing I do on my blog. Kind of a creative outlet of sorts. I've always wanted to create my own storyline with a deep lore background. Something like Lord of the Rings in style I guess. Although I am not in control of the lore in SoD, I get to create a fun story about my experiences with it. :)

@Waldoff/Aomi: Great :)

Planet Venus uses XSLT to translate a bunch of XML to XHTML. So we can attack the XSLT if we want to attack the actual HTML, or we can just poke the CSS files. I'll contact you on IRC and send you the default CSS that's currently in there.

Fun! :)

Edit: I gave the Planet a nicer URL (without ~) and made it update every day at 1 AM and 1 PM (1:00 and 13:00) CET. Wow, many cool new postings everywhere, I barely get to read them :D Also, I put the current theme files up there, just in case you want to get a head start on them because I probably won't be able to contact you until Sunday or so. Wheeee.

Edit 2: Also, you can subscribe to the entire news feed of the planet here: http://www.psy-q.ch/planetdalaya/atom.xml We'll probably have to add a link to that in the XSLT file.
