SoD Audio Tutorial

Xardon recently figured out how to play specific audio files in a specific area of a zone.

Our first big endeavor with this new tool is going to be adding an audio portion to the tutorial in The Dream. So far we only have planned explaining each trial and how it correlates to the game.

The reason for this post is to ask a couple questions:

-What do you think should be added to the end audio portion near the last. What did you have trouble learning that a quick shout out will help with?

-Know any good voices that we could hire with fame?

We want this to be the most informative as we can without overcrowding new players with information. Remember that the new patcher should auto UI a better one than the default now so keep the UI suggestions out.

Is this for people like Vargg?

I think the biggest thing will be fact that you have to hail people to talk to them. Unlike in WoW and other games where you just right click on them. The default moving with arrow keys instead of WASD and the default auto attack key. Its the little things like the controls that I would think someone who hasn't played EvQ before or is coming back from a long break would be most likely to forget. Especially if they were playing another game.

Good voice as in hard to miss or good voice as in that newscaster idon'thaveanyaccentatall voice?

if it isnt already mentioned, Dalaya's Beginners is there to help players, dont be afraid to ask questions, most people still in Dalaya's are the helpful ones that stay because they like to help people.

other than that, ill definatly be looking forward to testing it out.

as for the voice.. i would egotistically suggest my own.. but then again, im not famous, nor do i think i am easy to understand..

and i think ease of understanding and clarity is top priority, kinda of a neutral voice.

You could put out a contest for audio clips from people with a sample dialog, and offer fame as a reward to the one picked to do the audio for the dream.

Also, will this be used elsewhere in the game? This could really open up new doors for content.

I would be interested in doing a voice audition. Why not grab a simple script from the game or even type up a little 'audition script' that would let you guys pick someone to hire? Then all ya would have to do is let people record small MP3 files

I agree! Depending on how well the voices go for the dream trials this could open a lot of very interesting options for the devs when they're developing new zones/content.

the majority of the players that I know play without sound. Because EQ sound is bad. I'm assuming turning off the game default sound would also kill any voice recordings, yes?

Problem I see with this - a lot of new players have sound issues when they start up the game for the first time, therefore if they are trying to go through the Dream, there is a chance they may not even hear the audio clip.

^^ Edit: never mind on that one, if you can enable sound even when EQ has it disabled this is a non-issue.

We would need to put a distinct message in the main window to say that in order to hear these audio clips you will need to enable sound in-game.

As for stuff to include in the audio clips, I think that basic movement keys, such as < > v ^, jump, crouch, etc; something like the two stones in pocket plane (hence the old tutorial map) would be the best thing for new players, as the movement keys certainly aren't standard to some other games, especially if you haven't played other MMORPGs.

By the way... how specific is the 'specific area of a zone'? Would triggers be like jumping onto a rock or walking through the northwest quadrant of the zone.

I'm sure they added a trigger to the area script in the quest engine.

Don't forget to put a text message telling players there is an audio portion to the tutorial. I don't even know if I have the sound on in the game since I keep my comp speakers off most of the time. Blame those horribly annoying talking ads.

OK sorry I'll prolly be derailing this but
Nope. We can change sounds to our hearts content now.
would mean you actually *could* remove some (subjectively) annoying sounds like the fires in Sepulcher ? Cause I can't speak for everyone but I'm sure people with sound often had the idea to turn it all off because of those.

and possibly lower the volume or change the howling wind sounds cause i know i find those extremly annoying..

i dont play with my sound off or speakers off, i usually listen to some songs in the background while still hearing footsteps and such from the game :)

annoying sounds like the fires in Sepulcher ?

Yes, browse to your SoD directory, right click somewhere in the main folder, select New, Text Document, name it "fire_bonfire_lp.wav" (without the quotes of course) done. Now the fires in Sepulcher will be gone.
