Sense Traps

This skill feels impossibly difficult to skill up.

I have to hunt for traps that are not well documented on the wiki, if they are in range of my skills, i can uncover them. Once uncovered, i can no longer gain skill increases from the trap. If i disarm or trigger them they do not respawn for sporadic periods of time, but very long periods of time in any event.

I can sense my own thurgadin bolt trap, but i recently stopped getting skill increases from trying to sense my own trap.

I'm upping my own "set/disarm traps" skill with the thurgadin bolt trap.
I have yet to get any skill increases disarming any of the traps I have disarmed and i'm stuck at a skill of 90 in sense traps.

This skill does not scale with leveling... a low level rogue would have to devote more time to trying to sense traps than to leveling to be able to uncover a trap for his group. As a result, everyone just appears to "eat" traps and there is no real sense to ever disarming the ones i've come across.

It would be nice if i could up skill on a trap whether discovered or not.. or otherwise just be able to up the skill by hammering it. If i can at least see them, i can understand upping the "disarm" skill somewhat slowly so that a rogue could at least tell his group "there is a trap.. but i can't disarm it yet."

i agree there arnt enough traps to work on you set/disarm skill but for a low level rouge theres a trap in the rouges guild at the bottom of the pit (6 acttuly one in every conner and 2 in the middle) these can take you rather high for a newbie from there it gets really alot harder am always going to Kalidam and trying not to set off the shadows trap there but its the only safeplace to work on ur skill except highpass in the watter (make sure you have EB) but thats guarded by the mobs above out so you would have to beable to solo those while underwatter

btw you shouldn't be able to skill up with your set trap skill since it clearly says its loosely based on the disarm skill

I am going to say this

1) At some point you did not need traps to raise sensing(very long ago)
2) Until recently you lost traps for like 8 hours if you disarmed them
3) Now those traps spawn in like 15 minutes. (So i dont know what sporadic periods of time you are talking about since this is no longer true)
4) There are plenty of things to disarm later on, although most of them are just annoyances.
5) Your bolt traps will take you all the way to 250 in both.

Really I would just stay away from sense/disarm traps until your 65 and a rogue and have nothing better to do, because until then its pretty much useless.

The skill is annoying and slow , but it is nowhere near as slow as you think it is with the recent changes.

First, let me say that I've skilled up my rogue's sense/disarm traps over the past 9 or so months, so I do have experience in this (from a player, not a dev).

As of Jan 20, traps are respawning normally again after a reasonable period of time. Not something you'll want to stand there and wait for, but something you can hit a few times during an extended xp excursion. Before that, you were correct, they were not respawning unless the zone was reset.

As for being documented on the wiki, you can ask/search around for traps around the level which would be appropriate for your skill. I found most of the ones I skilled up on based on guesses as to the level of the zone, and experience from having xp'd/farmed/explored in most of those zones (on a variety of characters) and hit traps. You could also add them to the Wiki to help others in the future. ;)

You can also search the forums here for references to traps. I found many hints as to where to look that way as well.

Make no mistake about it... this skill will take a VERY LONG time to skill up. It's the most time consuming skill to raise that I know of. However, if you spend some time exploring those areas you're likely to XP in, you can find the traps (either with sense, or by setting them off). When you find one, add it to your map so you know where to look the next time. Once you've done this, it doesn't take much time at all to disarm the traps for your group.

I agree there aren't a lot of places where it's a great benefit to disarm the traps rather than setting them off, but there are definitely a few that are much better to disarm than to activate.

I don't understand what you mean. How can you skill up on a trap you don't know about?

or otherwise just be able to up the skill by hammering it.

I would not be in favor of making this that easy to skill up. As one of the most challenging skills to master, I had a lot of fun with it. I'd hate to see it become another easy skill to raise like sense heading.

All that said, I DO think there are far too few traps in Dalaya. Hopefully more can be added with new zones.

heh
heh heh.
Ha ha ha.
MWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHAHAHAHAHAH! :haw::haw::haw::haw:

Sorry had something in my throat...

What a horrible thing to say :(

Whyso? If it's because you want them added to existing zones, I'm just being realistic. The chances of someone going back and retrofitting is quite small while most of the content development is being done on Iksith.

I think Rorne meant more traps in new zones would be less than a bonus for anyone who is not a rogue =P

Itd certainly kill the server for rogues to me more desirable in groups. I'm not complaining that we arent desirable, but i'm in favor of any little boost :D

this was very helpful - thank you for the fast and curteous replies.

i was posting in spite of my fear of "NOOB -- FIGURE IT OUT YOU LAZY MORON" replies.

I didn't know that I could max up the sense traps on my own bolt trap.
I was getting points for it, but then stopped. Maybe it's just a dry spell.

My skill is currently (92).

Highkeep looks like a good (and scary) place to up the skill 180-200.

If I rob the newport bank another 3000 times i should have enough money to stop having to work the skill so darn hard. =o

and Ban - start worshipping Tarhansar and people might like you more.

rogues w/ moral fibre have no issues getting groups.

My tomes seem to imply i dont have any problem getting groups most of the time. Tarhansar is for pussies. Real men worship Gradalsh.

Also: if you can in fact raise your skill to 250 with the bolt trap kit, i dont see how theres any problem at all.

High keep is the fastest skill raises you will ever do , just be sure to bind in shadowdale.

I am not sure how the skill ups are determined but the kit has many periods where it seems it wont give you anymore , if you keep spamming it eventually it will give in.

The rogue guild in newport gives a reward necklace with like +12 sense or disarm on it too, which is very useful for when you start doing HK.

I believe I did mielecha to like 80, then trapped to 100 and sat in yaralith forever doing the acid traps to like 115 and then sat forever doing the root traps in the sewers

i'm bumping this thread to ask help -- does anyone know how to get from 140-180 in sense traps other than spending points at the guildmaster?

highkeep starts at 180 senseable and yaralith ends out at 140.

not sure where i could train to go 140-180.

thank you

What skill? If the above is correct on HK starting at 180, I'm guessing it's in the 200s somewhere. If so, check out Emberflow. Just be careful of the dogs that see through hide/sneak. Not a great option for everyone, but I bet you can find a way in. ;)
