Secondary Items and Aug Slots

Was switching some of my gear around when I noticed my Lecimka's Soul Shard doesn't have a Aug Slot. At first I didn't think much of it, remembering that Range and weapons do not have Aug slots. Then seeing a shield of freeport and Turtle shield in auction reminded me that shields do have Aug slots.

Now the real question... Secondary Items that are not shields seem to be lacking Augs. Is this intended? Coldstone conjuror globe if I recall correctly doesn't havea aug slot, nor does The Teachings of Lord (incert Gnoll Chef name).

Anyone out there that might be able to confirm this?

Are secondary Non-Sheidl items not suppoes to have aug slots?

As far as I know Shields are the only Secondarys wich wre supposed to have aug slots.

You're talking about a shard, a globe, a book (teaching is I suppose ?).
No aug on those, only shield as Nwaij said (and not all shields have :/ )

This brings up the question then..

Whats considered a shield and whats not a shield?

Is having AC on a secondary only item mean its a shield?

Or does it specificly need ot be called.. Sheild of X.. or Shield of Y

Soul Shard has 25 AC on it and is only secondary only item. Looks like a shield, but currently doesn't seem to be due to lack of Aug.

It's a shard, and much like a gem or a crystal it doesn't get an aug slot because of this.

It's even more complicated, Noxious shield is obviously a shield but doesnt have an aug slot because it's rangeslot-able.

For your question, let's say everything not named "Shield" shouldn't have an augment slot, even if it's a secondary with decent amount of AC. Otherwise usually it will be a shard or some gem (like mystical summoner shard which could look like a shield) with AC but mainly other stats better suited for a caster. Of course you'll find counter-examples...let's discuss of them in this thread and you'll see there is coherence in the staff's choices.

Even better ; I was talking about a CoD item, the mystical summoner shard. It has no aug slot. Now check another CoD item : Buckler of unending pain. OK this is not named "shield", but buckler is a type of shield ; and it has an aug slot while both items are same tier and close in stats. See the pattern ?

Clearly weapons, crystals, and shards have no slots in them, but shields, cloaks, armor, etc all have secret compartments. This is why they can be aug'd.

The gem/shard rule is basically just an naming reflection of the original conscious choice to not put an aug slot in an item - the real reason being that the item was balanced with a LACK of aug slots in mind.

For these items (and others such as weapons, aug slots can be added if you like . . . for a loss in stats as they are rebalanced. I don't think this is what anybody really wants. Variety in items is great!

Basically if you find an item without an aug slot, you may feel free to post and ask if it was intended or an oversight. But particularly for items named as gems or shards, it's been the case that it's intended.

Thats :) thats what I was wondering.. so general rule of thumb

Shield of X... Aug slot
Shard of Y.. No Slot

Now here is the million dollar question... Shields give Double there AC in a Block still. What do shards do??? Is the 25 AC on the soul shard treated like a shield for the block skill? or does it just add AC.

For that matter.. how about weapons with AC on them....

I think I remember reading that shards do not offer the block bonus, but I'm not 100% sure. I am sure that weapons do not. I'm less sure as to whether any AAs (specifically Weaponshield) increase in the benefits they offer when you're holding multiple weapons, and I can't log on to check the text at the moment to see.

Hmm that's a good question actually.

I don't know if there is any secondary shard available fo tanks/melees, if so, the question stands.
Regarding the soul shard, the class restriction doesn't allow any class with block skill to wear it (unless shaman gets a block skill), so it doesn't matter.

The block bonus for shields applies whether your class gets the block skill or not. You just add the bonus to 0 instead of to 250 or whatever.
