Raid Accessibility & Content Relevance

It's funny that most of the people supporting a server wipe are people that have quit already and just stalk the forums. Lol

I would ask what you are basing that off of (as you are incorrect) but that doesn't even matter.

Your point is that it is funny that people who obviously care enough about SOD are taking their time to weigh in on a possible solution to keep it going.

Man, I wish people who didn't care about this game weighed in more. I bet they would have really constructive feedback.

There is zero reason to start a second server with the same content. that requires people to create a new character and start over. You can do that on this server. Make a new character and go have fun. A second server would just split the already low population in two. Additionally, with a server wipe especially, instead of a log-jam at the higher tiers, there would be one at the lower tiers ... quick everyone it's a race to kill ancient rock torrent!

Correct me if I am wrong, but the problems being discussed on this thread are the fact that some tiers have limited raid opportunities and that new characters need more people to play with. Here's a thought. If all of you that want to wipe the server or create a second one get together log out your current characters and start new characters we kill two birds - there will be less people raiding at the high tier log jam and more low level characters playing ... win, win! Once your new character reaches the tier of your old, then you can bring the out of retirement if you desire.

If you feel that you would be too tempted to log your old character in then I suggest this proposal: 1) give your password to someone who plays. 2) Grant them POA over the account. 3) Have them change the password and not tell you the new password. 4) Instruct them not to give you the new password until your new character reaches certain goals that you set in advance at the time of the account transfer (xxxx mana, xxxx hps, xxx aa's, xx tomes, etc.). Perhaps the staff could even serve such a service - all they would have to do is change a password and not give it back until you provide proof that you have satisfied your own requirements to earn it back. If the staff won't do it and you don't have any trusted friends, I'll volunteer to hold your account ransom for you! o_O:p

In terms of recruiting new players for this server, "We are holding some people's accounts for ransom while they level up alts to help new players but there are still a bunch of people raiding at high end and selling gear that trivializes content and you will never catch up to them" doesn't quite have the same punch as "We are doing a server wipe! Come join on a level playing field!"

I was going to say pretty much this same thing.

Keep in mind, the suggestion of 'all of you make new characters' is a bit of a miss, because we have/are and that isn't attracting new players. It's just recycling older ones.

I don't think a server wipe is the answer. Shrouding or something so that existing players could play with lower levels and get some reward out of it would be nice though.

It's hard to get motivated to level up when its just you 2 boxing ad infinitum until you are 65 with 200aas.

Do you really think that the idea of a server wipe would attract at least as many players as the server would lose because of a wipe? I don't and that's probably where we shall have to agree to disagree because I don't see any way that you will convince me that it will and I don't see any way that I will convince you that it won't. Correction, there would be one way that one of us could prove it - a server wipe, but that would make this conversation moot to me at least because I wouldn't be playing the game or reading these forums anymore.

let them open a 2nd server and i guarantee it will have more people playing it then the current (inflated) server. its easy to figure out that half of sods current playerbase would leave for the new server and if the new server gets a little bit of advertisement (EQEMU forums, P99, Reddit, ETC) i could see it easily getting 200-250 players. People do not want to play catch up, they want to be in the mix, they want to be actively playing with "other" people. EQ was not designed to be a SOLO game (go play wow if you want that).

Granted people on the old server would be pissed but who cares? Wait a year or 2 then open transfers.

No one wants to see anyone go, so a straight up server wipe might not be the answer, but do you want things to remain the exact same?

Rhetorical or not, yes, I do think it would draw more people.

That said, offering up solutions such as 'don't play your high end toons' as an alternative isn't constructive. A) this already happens, and B) that isn't going to entice new players to the server.

This server has a massive population problem, and it's pretty reasonable to believe it will die a slow painful death if nothing is done. A server wipe isn't the only solution, but to me it is the solution which requires the least effort and has the highest (at least in my eyes) potential payoff.

its an emulated game of a game from 1999.. sure population is the problem. It's called advertisement. I didn't know about this game until I was searching for an old EQ live fight to show a friend, stumbled across p99 and ultimately heard about SoD from someone playing that game. Cant really just slap it on EQEMU and hope that the 800 people there flock over here. Figure out a way to advertise it more and bank on its old school EQ feel with a twist.

been chatting with Tev in game about this.. find a way to advertise to those people who are 30-40 years old (because those 30-40 year olds were 15-20 years old playing EQ when it came out and was popular.) I'm 29 years old and was considered young when I played EQ. This game isn't appealing to teenagers these days. The fighting looks lame, the graphics are bad, the numbers, no PVP - compared to other games. Find a way to reach your target audience and advertise to them. Wiping the progress of those already playing will do nothing but make most of us quit.

I could promote the hell out of sod if i wanted to but why would i? i would never recommend this game to any friends as its way too top heavy. Sod should be called SOLOQUEST because all new players can do is box till 65 and if they actually do manage to stick it out to 65 they see how bad it really is trying to find a group and quit. EQ is a social game, you have to talk to people, you have to make friends, you have to join a guild (yes if you want to raid you will have to join a guild) its the reason p99 has and will always be the #1 EQ server (it has more people playing it now then most live servers).

maybe if advertising happened it would get more people than all 2 of your friends. Maybe if advertisement happened we could get 60 new people (which is more people than are currently online atm) then the game wouldn't be so top heavy

And when those supposed 200-250 people join up and play for a few years and the server becomes top-heavy again? Just another reason why I would not come back after a wipe ... "I devoted 10 years to progression and still never saw all of the content ... if they did it once, they will likely do it again ... pass."

Think about this ... A server wipe would likely cause half of the current population to leave, and I think I think half is a conservative number. That's about 75-100 people (if you consider that half the number that play at our busiest times are boxes, which I believe is also conservative), which is almost half of what you guess the new population would be after a wipe. Instead of talking about a server wipe, which would cause many people to leave, we should be asking how do we get those "200-250 people" to join without a server wipe? There has to be another way to advertise to those folks that are out there. This isn't Field of Dreams ... it isn't going to be as easy as, "if you wipe it they will come."
