Public opinion?

Hello everyone!

I am writing a symbolic interactionist paper for my sociology class on the topic of the MMORPG. I have gathered all of my own facts and information, and thought it wouldn't be a bad idea to see if I could get some opinions from the SoD community on the topic.

The basic concept of symbolic interactionism is that people act toward things based on the meaning those things have for them; and these meanings are derived from social interaction and modified through interpretation.

For example, we see "raiding" in SoD as means to acquire power through a large raiding force, and we see "guilds" as ways to unite with others whom share a common goal.

I was curious to see if anyone would take the time to reply with their ideas of "symbols" in MMORPGS, and what these "symbols" mean to them.

Thank you all for your time! =)

Many players see owning high end 'raid gear' or presence on ranking lists (like the class top five list), or ownership of a high end charm as evidence of power, achievement, status, and skill.

Not sure if that's the kind of thing you are looking for.

one could say this is a symbol of their self worth. A symbol to show as a reflection of how much self worth or even self superiority over others.

Yes! Things of that sort is exactly what I was looking for. Anything that has a specific meaning attached to it, really. =)
