Even people that would normally pick an okay name with another race suddenly think they're comedy jesus if they make a vah shir.

Hee hee. Comedy Jesus, that's classic. I shall save you with my funny, yo. Yeah if I was a cat, I would do the same thing. I'd pick some lopsided name. Kurkitti McSlammi. Ha ha! I'm Comedy Jesus. Ah, not really.

Yeah, I think Wiz is right.

Besides, cats are evil... just look at that lil basterd :(

That could be you on the wrong side of the gun :p

If the the primary reason behind disallowing them was naming issues, perhaps it would be possible to code vah shir to only be created with random generated names?

The random name generator has created some pretty retarded names in the past, and even if it were possible (it probably isn't) it'd be a lot of work.

I know someone playing EQ2 that has used normal names the entire time I've known them(about 3 years now), yet because he's a kerra, he has cat in his name.
It occurs to me neither of you are talking about SoD--as far as I know we've never had vah shir. That makes more sense, since it seemed massively unlikely to me that anybody who'd been playing a human or elf or whatever for a few weeks would turn around and make a vah shir with a shitty name knowing it's against the rules. Live's naming policy isn't at all enforced; I would venture to guess that the people who normally make good names are smart enough not to make shitty ones just for the occasion. Purrpurr Hitbyatruck is an awful name anywhere, but it isn't illegal on live.

Of all the Shir I had made on the live servers, none ever had a name with references to a feline in any way. I always cringed whenever I saw someone with a reference to a cat in their characters names. The worst I ever saw was Cutelil Kittyfuzzball, but there certainly were numerous other contenders for that top billing.

But then again, frogloks weren't safe from that bad name creations... Tastesjust Likechicken just took the cake.

I've always hated blantantly trying to look funny names. These people should just stop playing any ORPG's and just sign up for AOL and play around in the chat rooms for the rest of their lives. Bloody morons.

I didn't like Vah Shir because they made no sense. An agnostic shaman? Seriously, wtf?

In what way does that not make sense? Shamen worship spirits and whatnot, not a specific god, and plenty of religions don't have a god (see: bhuddism), which is what agnostism refers to. Agnosticism basically boils down to an uncertainty about gods, that's all; in a world where there are oodles of magic forces which act independantly of the gods, it's a reasonable stance.

Also, I've not played shammies much--do other races not have the option to be an agnostic shaman? That'd be kind of silly, if true.

edit--plus that objection doesn't mean a hill of beans in SoD where everyone starts unsworn anyway

Shamanism and deism are two very, very different things. Shamanistic cultures historically tended to be atheistic, though some believed in both shamanism and deities.

There is nothing about an agnostic shaman that doesn't make sense.

I remember those days. I also remember my froglok Kermkerm frogfoot
and my Iksar MurrMur pawkitten those got changed pretty fast but i like to name my chars things that are completly oppisite of what they should be but those were a long time ago now i like to use Roleplay names which sometimes stil get changed and i remember way back in the day when this topic was made that Wiz had some sort of lore as to why you couldnt play them and then he added "I never liked being a pussy anyways"
so he holds a valid point

That's one hell of a bump.

Pre-emption: Anyone planning to post something with the words "Lands of Magic" in their post should just go ahead and not post. Let's let this thread sink back down unless we actually have something new to add. The staff's well aware how many people want vah shir back, and all the important arguments have been aired. There isn't much left to do in this thread.

Thinkmeats, I have noticed how much you hate this thread, but I didn't want to resurrect it under a new title, just had a possible suggestion.

Perhaps Vah Shir could be a race you apply for? In one of several ways, either via email to a specified GM who could create the character for you, OR a script that would auto-disconnect the character until approved by staff and the name checks out OK.

This would cut a lot of the crap out, but I know how busy you all must be, and I just started here a few weeks ago. I mainly stick to elves, but I know it was always fun to see the Vah Shir, I liked their race. Also they're the only true beastmasters imho.

I think it could be a fun addition, given people could cooperate. One last idea, I sometimes get pop-ups on the char select screen, perhaps just a simple warning pop-up promising an instant account ban on blatently stupid names could solve the problem. I know if i got a big red "Don't name your character OctoPussy or you'll get banned for life" window would be enough to set me straight, and I admit the temptation to name a character Cheetara is totally there.

I've just never been a fan of getting something I planned on respecting and obeying ruined cause someone else lacks the quality of self control. That being said, I am an Elf. Heh.
