Newbie wonders: Are there too many of us?

Elizor

Before going any further, I want to make it clear, I am a new player (1 week) myself, so this isn't a slam by "the elite old guard." But in the few short days I've been here, I have seen signs that the social order is fraying a bit. /ooc and /gu have become intolerable pretty quick, and I'm wondering if maybe it was just a lull for the first few days. Then again, I see that the #online record has increased by over 50% in a single month.

I have to wonder: is WR about to become a victim of its own success?

I really hope not. The first few days here, I was playing with a grin on my face (literally), because it was so much like the old days. But the last few days, I've had to shut off /ooc and /gu due to the same old, same old:

1. Whiners who think Wiz ought to program the game to suit them and have to tell everyone what's "wrong" with the game.
2. Whiners who think Wiz ought to wait on them hand & foot.
3. People whining about the game isn't exactly like EQ.
4. Folks who want to discuss religion & politics in /ooc.
5. Folks who want to discuss other games in /ooc.
6. Folks who want to complain about folks discussing other games in /ooc.
7. Folks who want to compain about folks complaining about folks discussing other games in /ooc, etc. etc.

My thoughts on this are pretty scattershot at the moment....Bringing up such an issue in EQ Live would be pretty pointless, but after seeing the innovations present in the game so far, I have to wonder if there's a solution that can implemented here (which would never be considered by SOE, may they rot in hell).

More user education?
Bannification?
More FAQs?
I can't see making access dependant on donations; huge legal issues.

But I guess the first question to ask is... "is there really a problem, or am I imagining it?"

Comments?

Elizor-

I just started playing myself, and no, you aren't imagining it. I got treated to about 2 hours non-stop in the <Winter's Beginner> guild of witty riposte such as "ur gay" and classics such as "oooooooohhhhsnapz". I got irritated and logged off. I want to not have to turn off the /ooc or /guildremove. I don't mind /ooc so much as it is an out of character channel. I just wish the default guild channel could be used for finding new players to group with and maybe some senior players available to answer some basic questions.

It will probably be quite a challenge for the WR team to find a good solution. I am very happy that WR is taking off. It is just growing pains, and based on the no-nonsense approach they take to everything else, I don't see why this will be much different.

I think I am just going to use the /ignore command tonight and go about enjoying the game.

Yeah, I'm not sure what we're going to do about OOC and <Winter's Beginners> shenanigans. Probably more liberal use of guildremove and OOC revoking.

Your concerns have been noted, at any rate.

The first thing I did before I even pressed any of the move keys, I /guildremove'd myself from Winter's Beginners. Now I'm double glad I did.

Honestly the thing that is most annoying is the discussion of WoW / EQ2 / or this XXX was in EQ1 why is not here. I too do not want to kill ooc but that get's annoying in a major way. I have had more enjoyment here than I ever did in EQ2 and WoW, both of which I hit endgame on, and could care less if you were in the horde or have a leet drood on Lucan...sigh.

I've gotten to a point where I just guild remove and completely ignore OOC. I'd rather not have to read the spam of Ding 33 or just plain old banter. I do see the value of OOC for people looking for groups and trying to buy or sell items. Don't know what would be involved, but is it possible to set up additional channels such as LFG and buy/sell? Or even create and idle banter channel.

Or everyone can just be considerate and not say something to everyone on the server unless it's actually useful. That could work.

The increase in player base is a good thing. The kewl g@merz I can do without.

I noticed a HUGE increase in this type of stuff after the mass postings went on at the EQL boards. In my opinion it has to do with a huge influx of EQL players. Not that all are bad apples, but the kind of stuff in ooc lately has EQL written all over it.

In the rare event I turn ooc on to ask a question I almost immediately regret it. :-/

Any possibility of adding an in-game related channel that only in-game topics can be discussed? OOC has so much garbage in it, but is still useful for consulting other players or for giving out info.

I know you can make your own channels via irc, but it would be nice to have one channel that is moderated (so people can't gain mod privs to it). :)

What about reverting OOC back to the zone and making serverwide chatter something different. You could then set guidelines to what the serverwide chat would be for (basically take away chit chat, dings, and other MMORPG discussions). Just a thought. :D

I'm very new as well (2 weeks), but I can't say that I have noticed it to be all 'too' bad, maybe it's just my playtime differs then most people's bedtimes.

As far as making a change to the way /ooc works, I like having the ability to send a general message to the players (Lfg, question, etc) and thought that was brilliant when I first started. Sure you're going to get those types of people who will try to blast you for asking 'a totally obvious question, and people's opinions will conflict...but on a whole is it really that bad?

I would hate to have the server chat means taken away, but in the end I know you will make the changes to make life less stressful on the GM's (as it should, just a pisser that some ruin it for most).

I think that most of /ooc and /guild (WR) problems come from a small but overly vocal minority. I never minded explaining that WR is not EQlive and that things are totally different, but it seems that some people tend to not grasp ideas as fast. This leads to the whole "ur gay" trash talk.

My point is, its only a small number of people ruining what is otherwise a good influx of players.

Disable serverwide OOC for anyone whos account is not at least 2 months old.

I think that's a damn good idea. :) Dunno about 2 months. Maybe 1 month. But either works for me.

Seriously though, can ooc be enforced as an "in-game" channel. Which means that only topics related directly to the game will be discussed. People can then create an irc channel for chat if they so choose.

I think it sucks that a lot of players who have been on the server for a while turn ooc off because of the garbage within...

As soon as I started raiding, I turned off OOC, and haven't turned it back on since. I see no real loss in having it off. /shrug.

Now, as for the guild thing... just remove yourself from it and join the plethora of other "beginner" guilds.

Just take away OOC privileges. Keep server-wide OOC, some of us like it. Those who don't can filter it.

How about just having an official chat channel for games like you might have a different section of the forums? That way, whenever someone starts babbling about WoW or EQ or Final Quest of Camelot or some shit, they can move it to games or they can be punished just like anyone else breaking an ooc rule.

I started WR right before it started getting the publicity that has grown the population so quickly. Personally, the influx of players has brought, in my opinion, the player type that ruined EQL on me.

I am happy to see the server grow and I hope to see WR continue to grow... I wish they could charge for it but I know and understand why they do not. The reason I say this is because I feel that those people that a majority of the population are critical of (the l33t club) are here because this is a Free game - these persons, in my opinion, are immature and greedy and don't have the appreciation for what WR really is and how much work goes into it - both by the staff and some players that take the time to share the knowledge they have gained through exploration (trial and error).

And I say immature above because it includes people of all age groups - not just to say that kids are ruining the game - and that is also not to say that there aren't "kids" who aren't helpful to the community because I know there are.

*** And please do not take this as a note to further bring age into the discussion - I hate talk that boils down to age discrimination ***

server wide OOC should not be allowed for peopel who have not played for a while.
This will train them to speak in /t or /g.
By the time the month/two months is up, they will be trained.

I appreciate social engineering as much as the next guy, but what do you take them for, dogs?

No, we will not limit OOC to people who have been around for a month or more just because a few bad apples screw it up. Better to police OOC more.

For those asking for a ban of server wide ooc for say 2 months - does this go per character or per account?

That would be pretty annoying for per character since I could have played WR from the beginning ( I haven't but am speaking in a What If sense) - if I create a new toon then I have to deal with the ban even though I have played forever.
