Naming Policy Changes Suggestion

I don't get it. I've got like 2 billion alts and have never had a name nerf although I think Ibn is overdue for one.

Remaking hotkeys is lame, changing the name in general is lame, making new friendslist is lame, being told to minorly change the phonetic spelling by one letter is lame; and in general this lameness is < me just keeping my name - especially since everyone i talked to that ive grouped with, minus temelin, liked my name...

This is true. It really sucks to have to set up an entirely new UI - so here's what I do; go to your SoD folder, find the two configuration files named Statick_ and UI_Statick_ and rename them to say Newname_ and UI_Newname_. (You'll probably have to delete the current Newname_ and UI_Newname_ first, if you've already been in game with that name).

I use this trick when asked to twobox a character that I've never played before, but I have another character that's a similar class. Or when some random GM stops by and changes my name (AGAIN! ARGH!!) It's a big timesaver.

This a public service annoucement was brought to you by the letter Q.

Ah, this is a nice trick to do for 2boxing or starting new characters.

Very simple but awesome suggestions ftw (take a backseat metal).

Metal takes a back seat to NOTHING.

And yeah the renaming of files I do all the time. When you have a billion alts and use two separate machines, it's helpful. :)

Since I mainly play 1 character and only sparsely play others, my main's UI is what I use on everything. I set up a simple batch file to copy my main ini and ui_ini files to all of the possible characters that I may log on, so all of these alts have an updated version of the UI I am used to.

I think the only way I could see a word name is if it was an alias for a certain reason and then it would need to be SPELLED correctly, and the rule sits fine with me because you can always use that as a surname and roleplay as never using that as your alias if the purpose is for actual roleplay.

Yes the naming policy can be strict, but what are you gonna do? I was a little upset when my rogue was forced to change names from Pokster because that is just the name I always used on my rogue. But I didnt get all angry and yell at the GM, who was VERY nice about the whole thing, I just asked for more clarification, got it, changed my name and went about my business.
What is more frustating to me is when you try to create the main character you had on live only to find out the name is already taken by a level 1 that, by looking at Fomelo, is never played... :(

Yeah, I use a fairly original name and have had mine stolen in games on pure spite because of the guild I was in by a level one toon that was never played. I think the naming policy is ok just as strict as most games, the difference is that it is actually enforced all the time rather than being enforced only when someone complains.

I can see your point with the wordplay names- some would make cool sounding, good names. The problem though is if you allow one then how would you stop the rest? Sure, Jabs seems like a fairly cool name, but if you allow Jabs what ground do you stand on when some guy is convinced his characters Mirror, Candles, and Jeans have totally sweet names? I would prefer GMs focus on gameplay issues rather then endless debates over names, so while a few "good" names may be lost I think the rules, as they exist, benefit more then harm the community.

Adding a rule/qualifier to the list that states they exist to preserve a more "realistic" fantasy world might be a good idea- force direction on folks who are thiinking of names, give them something beyond a list of DO NOTS:).

I think 'butthurt' was a little strong- shame on your pottymouth!

If you're going to critiq someone's logic you shouldn't use false analogies hammer =p
