Let's try and weed out the 1017 error.

Hello, does anyone read this?

As I read through some of the 1017 page I really got the feeling that some of it was just moaning over nothing, and at this moment I'm having a bit of time telling them apart, so if there are anyone here who are willing to write a questionsheet for people with the 1017 so we (hopefully) can get a basic idea of what is common between them.
I'd like for the following to be part of it:
Which Windows Version (Windows XP Professional SP 2, for instance).
Which router, with which version firmwire.
Which firewall (even if disabled or set to accept).
Which graphic driver + hardware.
Which type of connection with speed (also, on campus?).
Wireless?
Error message from the dbg.txt.

Anything else you can think off that might affect it.

PM it to me, or post it in this forum and then pm me a link to it, and I will sticky it.

That is all, you may now continue worshipping me.

These questions okay?

1.Version of Windows (including any service packs and exact version i.e Windows XP home edition):

2.Firewall in use (Have you tried turning it off then attempting log on?):

3.Router (If any) and firmware version:

4.Type of graphics card/Driver version:

5.Processor type and amount and type of computer memory (eg Athlon 3500+, DDR PC3200 2x512Meg):

6.Type of internet connection plus ISP and country:

9. Does logging on at different times of the day reduce or increase the error?

10. Have you tried logging on on another computer in your location or elsewhere?

11.Any filesharing background programs running or installed?:

12. How long have you had this problem?:

Now paste you dbg.txt file to the end of the entry showing the part where the error is seen.

Hope these questions are what you are looking for Homogenn.

Okay, I'm going to comment on your post a bit.

1) which service pack are you running, and which version of XP? Professional?
2) Are you running it all the time, and have you tried turning it off?
5) Which type of ram is that? I assume SD?
6) If possible, who is your ISP, and what country/state are you in?
7) This is pretty much what all people posting on the thread should receive, so it's pretty redundant.
8) Good suggestion, I'd really like to see this from people.
9) Do you ever run any p2p software?
10) Also valid.
11) We've received plenty of information about people who have both formatted and reinstalled without luck, so it's pretty redundant too. If it works, it's not the issue we're looking for.

And as for your dbg.txt file, I'd really like it if people just posted the part where they get the error, instead of the entire thing.

might have fixed it

so I was runing all the SoD stuff out of a sperate file from my EQ folder and was getting this 1017 error for a week now and i am a new user so I havn't even been in the game well out of deperation I put all the SoD files in my EQ folder and I have been playing a week now with out a 1017 error even durring prime times so I hope this helps

1) Which Windows Version (Windows XP Professional SP 2, for instance).

I currently run Windows XP home edition

2) Which router, with which version firmwire.

Direct Internet Connection. (No router)

3) Which firewall (even if disabled or set to accept).

Windows Firewall is my only firewall, I have tried disabling it as well as setting it to accept.

4) Which graphic driver + hardware.

ATI Radeon Mobility x600 (driver version 6.14.10.6534). I also am running a pentium 4 1.86 Ghz processor with 512 MB of ram.

5) Which type of connection with speed (also, on campus?).
Wireless?

Highspeed 10 mbps connection. But I do not have the whole 10 mbps to just myself. I share it with everybody at my school (I am on campus). At max hours I share the connection with anywhere from 1-5k people. ***The only time that I have this issue is during peak hours at my university when there is an abundance of people using the internet. I do not use wireless. Im not sure of my ISP and I live in Canada.

6) Error message from the dbg.txt.

At this point the game either crashes completely or restarts from the screen immediately following the Eula.

7) Do you have these issues during peak hours/non peak hours?

To be honest the population of the server has no bearing on my problem. The peak hours at MY school, however, do have an effect on my problem. It seems that I am unable to connect only when there are alot of people using the internet.

Other than this I dont really know what else to say. Thanks again for all your help Homogenn, it is much appreciated.

If there is anything else I can help with just ask.

Thanks, Jinxat.

P.S. No file sharing running background. The only file sharing program I have on my computer is a local university hub program that allows me to share my stuff with people at my school, but I never have it turned on. I have had this problem since I moved to school (residence), however, whenever I go home for the weekend (and play at home on the same computer...laptop) I dont have this problem.

Ahh so it doesn't work for you at school, sounds to me then that your school is filtering out certain ports, which would cause these types of symptoms.

I doubt they are if it works during non peak hours. I also think this post wasn't meant for dealing with the issue, since I wanted to make sure I hadn't forgotten anything in the questions when I made it.

Homogenn is right. I can connect at non-peak hours so my school is NOT filtering out the SoD ports.

I've noticed that 1017 is related to bandwith available. What I mean by that is, if your connection is getting limited bandwith (try running bittorrent or something that excessively hogs your BW) and then try to connect to SoD you will get 1017 quite a bit. Turn it off free up the BW and you have no problems.

In reference to the above post only able to play at non peak hours. I'd bet money that the bandwith during peak hours is saturated with people and thus giving you the 1017. Reason you can connect during off peak hours. I have no idea why, but SoD seems to have a (if current connection = >10kbs or something similar ) deny access (aka 1017)).

This is what I've found so far in me testing it. Since I travel ALOT and usually on hotel connections, I'll get 1017 when I'm at a hotel with alot of people staying in it. Always during prime hours people are in their rooms. Which again brings me back to the bandwith reference.

Does the datarate.txt file in the EQ folder do anything here on SoD? I remember years ago altering this number would help people with dialup connections. No idea if it works at all here.

When EQEmu was a lot younger, we used datarate a lot, but I don't know if it's used any longer, at all, I haven't heard mention of it in quite a while. You could always test it. And as I mentioned earlier, every test I've done has also led me to believe it has to do with bandwidth.

From everyone else's descriptions, it sounds like bandwidth could be a good reason why this is happening. However, I'm not entirely convinced it's what is plaguing (sp?) me. I thought it might be my bandwidth before, so I encrypted my signal in an effort to keep any neighbors off who might be sucking it up. I then entirely uninstalled bt and soulseek (not just closed them...removed them completely). I also turned off all of the computers in my house other than the one I was trying to connect with and plugged directly into my router (yes, ports are open. Even tried DMZ). I have great connections on everything else, meaning WoW, bt, soulseek, NWN, BF, etc. I have lots of games I play online, and none of them act as if the bandwidth is gone. I might be missing something, but everything I've tried on my end does not point to bandwidth. If anybody has any other suggestions I'll gladly take them.

Homogenn- I know I have not answered your questions in this thread yet. I will post all of the info up here after work when I get the time. Haven't had much time lately anyway with a new baby and all... If you feel you really really need to know right now or your head just might explode, it is all posted in that other book disguised as a thread. I think the majority of my information is around page 2 or 3. I want to wait until I get home so I can run Everest and make sure I'm posting all of the information exact and not fudging things from going by memory. I appreciate your efforts!

PS-I have also tried logging in at 6am cst (gmt -6 I believe), because there is usually about 50 people on at that time. (Read:about as far away from peak time as you can possibly get), and I was still not able to connect.

Maybe I've done something to offend someone, and now they're laughing hysterically at my expense. :finger: buddy. :911:

Well I have tried messing around with datarate.txt and havent had any luck. Im not too sure if that has anything to do with this anymore.

So if this is a bandwidth issue and Im at school am I basically shit outta luck? Are there other possible solutions to this or am I stuck? Just wanna know one way or the other so I can get over it. Anyways thanks everyone for your help, finally we are atleast getting some answers for this issue.

Thanks, Jinxat.

I'm not sure bandwidth is the issue. I have been running only EQ with no other programs running and I still have difficulty connecting and zoning when I do connect. Also it makes no difference to 90 or 300 players on server, the error is still there. Like I said in an earlier post I was able to play the game with no connection issues whatsoever when I logged into the official servers.

it may not have to do with bandwith realy. it could be an overflow issue with your rotter or firewall limiting the bandiwth that comes into cerent ports at that time think of it as a network clog on your end try disableing any runing firewalls and power cycleing your rotter

bump...So any word on if this problem is fixable? Or should I just give up for the most part?

Ive tried both joining irc with the client and with that applet with no luck either way. I think my school might block the irc ports.
