Let's try and weed out the 1017 error.

Whoah... I connected last night. Even better.... I was able to repeat the success several times. During both peak and down times. Don't know what happened, I didn't change anything on my end before trying. Just a random shot. We'll see how it lasts.

Homogenn-didn't reply to the sticky because I didn't want to fill it with crap.

Jinx-Knowing now that this started when you moved into your dorms....I'd bet lots of money it has to do with the traffic on your end. Maybe you are timing out because of the bandwidth being all eaten up. Hijack the server, clear every single connection, reconnect and try to log in really really quickly before you get caught and see if that helps. =)

How do i do that duktak? Ive tried repairing my connection over and over...Never works out...

LOL...Sorry. I was making a joke. I think that would get you in a little bit of trouble. It does sound to me like it's the bandwidth being sucked up on your end, though. If you can connect at home, then it isn't the computer. Have you tried asking the network admins if they have the SoD ports open? I dunno if you answered this already, and it's late and I'm too tired and lazy to look right now. If you can connect during down times for your campus, it might not be ports though. I think it's your connection having so many people on it that you're going so slow you timeout.

Aye, this is the conclusion that I came to a long time ago :( . Guess there are no fixes. Slow internet sucks.

I have a slow connection but haven't been getting the 1017 error untill tonight. Went LD and been getting the error now.
Been playing for months and never had the error so some of it has to be on the servers side as well.

Jinxat, during times when you CAN connect and CANNOT connect do this:

http://performance.toast.net/

On this site select Shuttle + Text and select Open Hosting (UK) then Run Test.
This will test your bandwidth and show you a graph indicating your speed. If you notice a significant difference between the times you cannot connect and times you CAN connect that may be the reason.

Also, depending on how your network is setup, if other people at your school are using file sharing programs like Kazaa, etc, that would cause your issues to. I know when I lived with roommates back in the EQ-Live days our roommate left Kazaa up and we could never get into EQ. We'd crash a lot, it was so frustrating, when we called our Cable Modem provider, they said someone in our house was running a file sharing program sucking up all the bandwidth. So that would probably be why.

Homogenn do you know if they ever tried to up the timeout? Is that even possible? I remember it was talked about before, but I can't remember if it was ever mentioned again. Maybe that could help Jinx?

Okay, well I was just able to connect to SoD so I ran the test and my throughput was 340K. I will let you know more results when I get them. Thanks Xardon.

Also on the timeout issue, Im not sure if anything was ever changed. I think that might help out if it were able to be changed at all. Any word on that homogenn? Thanks in advance.

Just tested again as I was unable to connect. At 146 K connection right now. Guess that is majorly effecting me.

Okay, well based on Xardon and Duktak's information and reading up on network software I decided I would try something out.

Keep in mind that about 5 mins previously to what I was doing, I repeatedly got 1017 error about 20-30 times in a row. I was unable to connect and had about a 100-200 kbps connection.

WHAT I DID:

I unplugged my internet cable from my computer for about a minute and sit at the login screen (login/password). I then replugged in my network cable and as soon as I was connected I hit connect. Bam I was able to connect in an instant. Now this only worked once and I havent been able to try it again but basically what I found out was this; network software is built to monitor the flow of traffic and delegate a certain amount of bandwith per user in the network. When it knows how much bandwith each user is using up it then limits the users that are using alot of bandwith so that others are able to have a relatively quick connection (for browsing websites, checking email, etc.). Now basically what I did was remove myself completely from the network so that it did not have any information about me hogging bandwith (because EQ is pretty bandwith intensive from what Ive heard). So basically after I plugged in my internet cable I was able to connect instantly. So I was in essence cheating out everybody else on my network so that I could play, but fuck them haha!

I really really really hope this works, because if it does that would just be plain awesome. Im gonna try it again when I cant connect, and let you all know. But Im in game right now so Im just gonna try to enjoy myself.

Really hope this solves the problem for me. /pray

Peace out,

Jinxat.

Yeah that's pretty clever. Grats. I don't know how much of a pain getting to the back of your computer is for you, but if it's a hassle to get to your network cable, you can minimize game window and disable your network card, and then enable it again. It does the same thing, but you don't have to go digging behind your setup.

Alright, well I have tried this a few more times since the first time it worked and it appears that it was pretty much just a MIRACULOUS COINCIDENCE. I havent had the same luck, but for some reason before when I did this my connection more than tripled in speed. Ugh, lame ass problem. Oh well, guess I cant do anything but wait for more suggestions or for the school year to be over.

Have you checked your internet speed with performance.toast.net?? How does it look?
I have a cable modem with a decent connection:

Also, have you tried pinging a website or two to see if you're getting packet loss?
Example: Click Start -> Run -> type in cmd -> click ok

In the command prompt box type: ping -n 100 chaoticwinds.net
Hit enter

This will ping my server 100 times, you should get a request back for each packet it tests. If you get any or many Request Time Outs. Then there is something screwy with your connection and that would cause major problems too. I've found the EQ client to be very sensitive too, compared to other games, and if you get a lot of request time outs then that could cause the problem.

Yes Xardon, I have tested out my connection. My results are posted above. At absolute NON-PEAK HOURS I was getting about 1.5 MBPS. During the day I was running at about 340kbps, and at peak hours I am running anywhere from 1-200kbps. The minimum I was able to connect with was 340K. Unable to connect with anything less than that. Oh well. And pinging websites, I have tried pinging SoD's website before and I just tried yours now. All it says is "Request timed out" so I guess thats a problem.

It could be that your network has ping discarded. Our network at the school district I work for doesn't allow ping. I can ping IPs within our network, but anything outside that results in packet loss. Also, using programs like neotrace won't work behind our network because of that. I would find out if you can actually get ping results from behind your network before deciding that is the problem.

Yeah if you are getting Request Time Out 100% of the time then your school network has ICMP protocol blocked.

Homogenn, is there any word on upping the server timeout rate? I am just wondering because I think that this might possibly help out my situation. Maybe even just test it out for a few days or so to see if it weeds the problem out. If this has already been tried than I am sorry for bothering you. Thanks again.

Jinxat, I'm afraid there isn't anything we can do for you. Everyone else has seemed to get around this problem with various types of fixes, which none appear to work for you. I believe there is something about your school's network, bandwidth, or something else that's causing your issues and is completely out of our control. I know that's not what you want to hear, but I've done extensive research and testing, and believe it's probably something network related wherever you are. Especially since you have stated when you are at home it works fine. Sorry we couldn't be of any help for your situation.

Alright, thanks alot Xardon. I know its not what I wanted to hear, but atleast its progress one way or another. Good thing for me Im out of res in a week or two, so I only have to put up with this annoyance for a little while longer. I hope that everybody else having these problems finds a fix, and I hope that I can continue to help people out after Im out of school who are experiencing similar problems. Thanks again for all your help Xardon, its really appreciated.

Jinxat.
