np, sorry about threads getting locked and people being less than helpful. Some people here get freaked out because they don't realize that Sony offers free downloads of the game now or something and they're afraid they'll get in trouble.

Don't be a retard, Elysium. Look at where it points to.

Look closely... the text for the link is misleading, since certain terms are automatically replaced on these boards. If you click on the links (or hover over them) you will see that they actually point to legitimate sites.

Anyway, just spend 30 dollars on the game and install it. Do you really want to download 2 or 3 Gigs of data?

I used the sony trial one, use a dl manager to make a long story short. It occasionaly shorts the ie dl and stops, not resuming.

Indeed, as the GMs said, buy it. There's a reason why they locked the first thread(and likely will delete/ edit posts on this one). Don't pirate it. Downloading it "free" from SoE or elsewhere is no less different than shoplifting the game/ expansion(s) to play on an eqemu, regardless if you don't intend on using the cdkey. Granted there are anti-emu that would likewise debate about owning the game and expansions and playing on these servers. It's all a matter of an individual's accountability and ethics.

Or maybe we're just not really interested in the possible attention it could get?

Explain that? By your rationale, downloading a linux ISO from a distributor's ftp site that is also offered on a CD by the distributor is the same as pirating or shoplifting. You're wrong.

...right. EverQuest 1 still has a giant user base. It's very likely that many hundreds of people will download EverQuest or parts of EverQuest on any given day. Also, all current EverQuest cd's are out of date. Anyone who buys the cd will be going through the exact same process as suggested in this thread.

The client available for download on the Sony site is intended for people who plan on paying the monthly fees to play. Not only are they not making any money when someone downloads their game to play a free emulated version of it, they are actually losing money through the costs of bandwidth.

...right. Game 1 still has a giant user base. It's very likely that many hundreds of people will download Game or parts of Game on any given day. Also, all current Game cd's are out of date. Anyone who buys the cd will be going through the exact same process as suggested in this thread.

Where's the logic in that? When you buy the game, you install it from the CDs and then you have to patch. When you download the game, you install it, and you still have to patch. There is way more bandwidth being eaten up using the latter method.

Elysium, I'm sorry you don't understand how the patcher works. It's unfortunate that you're presenting speculation as fact. The least you could do is test it, which I suggest you do, for your own sake.

Up until sometime last year, whenever a file was updated, the patcher downloaded it completely. Now the patcher uses something called a delta file which is the difference between your version of the file and the updated file. In this way, bandwidth costs are cut. However, processing power is a lot more expensive than internet bandwidth, so rather than generating a new delta file every time someone patches to figure out the difference between your version of the file and the updated version, the patcher has delta files for each recent generation of updates. These delta files only go back as far as the delta file system was implemented, which just happens to be later than the data on all EQ Trilogy releases.

In the end, installing off of the EQ Trilogy cd's will save at most ~500 mb of downloads. EverQuest patched up to LDoN is around 3.9 gb. There is not way more bandwidth saved by installing off of cd's.

As for what Sony intends you to do with their patcher, who do you think you are to preach? You updated your client just like everyone else to play here. You did it from their servers using their bandwidth. You're either bitter because you look like an idiot for claiming my link was a virus, or you're trying to conform with the administration here who remember a time when passing out information on getting the client was dangerous. Either way, get over it.

You should own the game. End of story. Do not pass out warez. Do not pass out links to "free downloads."
