Those of you who had cable in the early 80's when arcades were the 'in' thing, who here recalls a television program called Starcade. It was show which kids played actual video games for prizes. The shows original host was Mark Summers.

But then later when it was brought to non-cable public channels, they left the actual arcade machines for some hokey cheesy flash-style games for kids and parents to play for prizes. The show went downhill from there and was cancelled after one season and half.

Better yet - the Movie, the Wizard (sp?) with Fred Savage about the NEW compitetion - that was my dream :D

Ah..the blessed 80's, I was likely one of the biggest Transformer's freaks in my town, back in 1987 when they released the movie that killed off the old 'bots so callously....none the less, for it's time, that was PRIME anime, at it's best.

You know when i was only level 30 in eqlive back before velious and just after kunark i met a 25 bard. her name ive long since fergotten but for the four hours i grouped with her and her brother i was not only impressed but surprised by how well she played a bard.

her brother played a monk and together they made an awesome pair. well up till this point in the game i had never met a bard play as well as she did so you can imagine my shock when her brother told me in a tell that she was 6. a year later as i was going through the ot i saw her and her brother again. she was level 60 and in one of the top guilds on the server her brother was the same.

i talked to them some more. found out that she not only played alone in her own bedroom but that she spent a lot of time just learning her toon. too this day whenever i see my daughter do something or say something beyond her age and i wonder if maybe shes just copying what someone else said or did i think about this other little girl and i smile. to all the people that think you have to be a ertain age to play this game well......your right and wrong...your heart has to be in the right place and at the right age....skills and the ability to teethe and walk will come later :p

When my kids are 6, I want them to stay the heck away from all video games. Get outside and do something active. Play sports, play with the neighbor kids, do something organized. I look forward to doing everything with them. I just don't want them to be stuck in solitude playing video games. Even MMORPGs can be too isolating. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy playing, but at that age I think there's much more to life. Their father has gone the video game route, and it gets ugly. You don't sleep because you're trying to get to the next level. Damn it I died. Well I just want to get the xp back from my unfortunate demise, it won't take long. Next thing you know, the sun is coming up. I should have known I was doomed from my D&D weekends of no sleep and eating only english muffins when I was around 12 or so. It's probably not realistic that they won't have any video games, but I'd like to avoid it as long as possible. But if they do have them, it gives me a reason to buy the newest console or what not. :)

..... steps off the soap box

OK back to flashbacks. Here's a good link that takes you to the super Mario show that was on Saturdays. I work at a university and one of the student employees showed me this. Too funny!

Anyone remember the Freedom Rock commercials on sometime around 87 or so? "Hey man, is that freedom rock?" "Yeah man!" "Well turn it up man!"

That commercial made me want to be a hippy. Plus the music was pretty damn good. Rock on Freedom Rock! And rock on Fraggle Rock for that matter (had to go to my friends house who had cable/HBO to watch that back in the day)!

You got the right idea ... BUT all the neighbor kids will be inside playing video games, which is the basis of this whole problem.
:sadf:

Yeah it is a big problem lately and won't be getting any better. When I was a kid we always went out and played kickball and flashlight tag at night. I see kids out on my street, but alot less than I was outside years ago.

Kickball fucking rocks btw. :)

I saw that my church is starting up a kickball league but the max age is 16! :(

yea im 21... and i would drop my computer out the window if the rest of the world would... but lets say i stop playing games and wanna go out and do something... that doesnt change the fact that everyone else is inside on their damn computer...

the world is going to hell... and im going with it

Not my neighbors, they have 5 kids (don't know how they do it) and they're outside all the time. They're non-stop. The only problem is that2 of their boys just seam to do everything they aren't supposed to (like beating each other up, throwing rocks, etc). Not a good example for my 3 1/2 year old right now. Apparently I can't win. :)

And now back to your regularly scheduled program......

And you can peg runners with the ball to get them out. It was a major hit at my elementary school.

36, which puts me firmly in the grip of the geriatric group. :(

Someone mentioned MacGyver! Go you! I watch MacGyver on TV Land and love it.

Someone also mentioned anime. :-D You forgot to mention Robotech, though. >:-( Grrrrr......
