Coming back after 4 years - question on pet classes

Question - once in the 55+ range, are either Magicians, Beasts, or Necros preferred over the other for groups? What about in the 65+ range and into raiding?

Planning to box one of those with a druid because I am lazy about traveling. :) But in all honesty, the pet class will be a main and will be what I want to get into raiding with.

Thanks!

Magicians are amazingly powerful, Beastlord is as well.
Necros have fallen from the God tier (imo) but are still really good.

Magicians get the most powerful pet, different forms (including one that procs gheals), powerful rains and summoned pets.

Beastlords offer a lot of utility to groups and raids. They have nice pet buffs that offer gheals and dps procs. All in all they are kinda like monks with pets, without kicks and FD.

I love Magicians in groups. Beastlords seem to have a harder time, even though they are amazing. Necros have probably hardest now a days. Just personal opinion though.

Well, as I was leaning Mag anyway, your response makes the decision that much easier. ;)

I was reading on the wiki that summoned armor and toys are not available in SoD, but weapons are? Are there any other significant changes from live I should be aware of?

Also - water pet has slow??? thats great!

There is summoned pet armor that mages get access to at 65, they can also summon an aug that players use to get crits from their procs before they can afford high end charms.

In my experience beastlords have no issues getting groups because of their ridiculous amount of utility while still doing like 70-80% of the dps of primary dps classes; it's more that there simply aren't all that many beastlords for some reason. With the current hand to hand situation beastlords are pretty OP until the very high end of 65+ raiding, where they are knocked down a peg to merely awesome.

Mages are bigdick DPS and are a fairly balanced class overall, so it comes down to what role you'd prefer to fill more than anything.

I try not to invite necros to xp. Mobs tend to die before they can contribute much dps. Beasts are great for the buffs regardless of tier and mages are pretty solid xp group dps.

I never have trouble getting a group if I want one. However, I prefer to solo much of the time. Contrary to what some think, necro's can contribute quite well with dps in a group.

yeah I think necros are good as well. DOTs actually reduce the amount of melee DPS a mob does so while they don't do as much damage as a mage, they do help tank. Also they have the group lifetap so they can add a little heal as well.

Kinda depends on the necro and the zone, but a necro with strands of life done can be pretty $ for a group depending on the zone and the mana pool efficiency of the rest of the grp.

Disclaimer: I'm a necromancer and clearly biased.

I would recommend playing each of the classes you're interested in for a bit. It won't take much time to create the characters and level them to a point where you can get a feel for how well you like them.

If you're set on boxing a druid, I would recommend going with either the mage or beastlord. For solo/boxed xp, I can't think of too many things that a druid would let me kill that I am unable to kill without one. However if you find that you enjoy playing the necromancer, don't worry about your dps in either xp groups or raids at level 65. A necromancer that can't keep up with a similarly tiered mage just needs to push buttons harder.

People will prefer the person before the character. If you're good at your class, whichever it is, you'll be fine with whatever you choose.

I am familiar with all three, just was wondering if with the changes in this server at higher end that I am unaware of if one or the other was preferred.

I played a nec on eqlive for ages. Not really interested in kiting. Going with mage, may possibly swap out a cleric for the druid, but as noted above, I am lazy with traveling.

On that note, perhaps I will swap in a Wiz for the Dru, but then gear drops are not as well covered...
