that I should have people use me as a referal when they join up but I have had 6 or more people join and can't see a way for them to do this.
Anyone know how to do this?
 
It's done when they actually sign up. For abuse reasons, it can't be done after that.
 
I just started a couple of days ago, got a few friends to sign up, and it said the referral name didnt check out? (yes it was the right name!) /shrug

I signed up both my brothers, and my g/f on this pc, and a couple of online mates have signed up too, would any of that make a difference? Not important just wondereing.
 
pretty sure that could be an exploit or a way to get around the system which probably would = ban of IP or both accounts at the very least.

Yah, I put Vincecross as a referral when I signed up, but it also gave me a didn't check out error.
 
Curious what to fill in the field? Should I tell my brother to put in my toon name or account name?

I used Vince as a reference as well, I'll most likely get Taza to log in here too. We started playing live again but losing interest. SOD seems to be pretty damn cool so far.

Especially if you have a static IP.

I can see some GM thinking to himself:
"WTF ? This guy is trying to refer 4 friends, but they all happen to have the same IP ? "
" What a dumbass. Instead of rewarding him with fame points, I'm gonna BAN all 5 accounts. "

Get 5 people that all live in seperate houses and have their own computers, otherwise don't bother the GMs.
If the GMs were idiots, it would just be too easy to exploit something like this, which is why they're not gonna
dish out fame points like candy, just because Joe Blow says his "imaginary" friends wanna join.

Bad form in the sense that I will gline you from IRC, IP ban you from the forums and delete every character you ever owned when I catch you, yes.
 
Ok this is going to sound really bad... as if i'm trying to skirt the system and all but... Well my brother wants to play, but sense I live literally right next door to my parents (funny how life is after Katrina), i'm 99% sure that I will have the same IP, seeing as how we both have a cable internet access from the same company/main line.

Is that true? And If so, is there any way we can verify that it's going to be two people playing? If not i'm not gona push it. :)

Having the same internet service provider (ISP) is not what determines your IP address completely. If I'm not mistaken, it will vary slightly with each individual customer account. Kinda like when you both have phone service with one company and live in the same state and town -- or in your case live next door to each other. Your phone number might start with the same 3 digits, but at least one in the last 4 is different. That analogy make sense?

If you both have seperate cable modems - you will not have the same IP - its impossible(well VERY unlikely and one of you will not be able to get on internet if it does). - HOWEVER - if you live close and decide to have a nice wireless that can reach so you can share 1 cable connection - then your External IP WILL be the same. Like they said before - IP wont determine who is 3+ boxing. Im sure play patterns and macro use go into this alot.

Also, even if you DO have the same IP, the restriction is on the number of characters per person, not per IP. Multiple people can play on the same internet connection using the same IP, just as long as each person is only playing 1 or 2 characters.
 
What about the MAC address on the NIC? Could that be traced at all to tell the accounts are from two different computers with incredibly similar IPs?

Don't worry about mac addresses. As for incredibly similar IP addresses, this would mean *nothing* other than you were on the same ISP (probably) as the other IP address/person. I play and sometimes DB, and my GF plays, and rarely DBs, so occasionally we have 4 characters from the same IP. If you were in such a situation a GM would probably contact you in-game and ask what was going on. This happened to me and my GF for the first time a few weeks back (after months of playing on SoD...) and we had to do a little 'test'. Again, as long as everything is as it should be, don't worry about it.

Same for myself and my wife, except we usually both DB (instant group). Although we've never had to do any tests.

Yeah, I was in a group with a guy 2 boxing and his girlfriend was visiting and player her char at his house. Wiz actually TPed right to our group and told us 3 of them were coming from the same IP. They explained and he ported away again.

Gotta say, nearly gave me a heart attack to suddenly see Wiz standing in front of me in the middle of a zone.
 
Me and my two brothers both play from the same place (on a network through a router), so probably have the same IP, according to the rules we could all two box, for a total of 6 characters, this is unlikely as we are to lazy to do this, the most we might do is log another character for some buffs or something, which I also believe is in the rules.
