"Windows - System Error" crashing..

Since starting SoD I've been plagued with seemingly random system crashes which drop me down to 640x480x4bit mode and completely black out the SoD window. Once it happens the first time for the night, it seems to happen more and more frequently afterwards. This may seem to point to a heating issue, but I have the issue in no other games, and never have prior to playing SoD. My first thought was that it may be drivers, but both 91.47 and 81.24 versions of nVidia drivers (I have a 6800) have the same issue. It's getting to be quite frustrating so if anyone has any other ideas I'm game to try them. Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure that it's SoD related. I run two different PC's with SoD and don't have this problem. One is running win2k with an Nvidia 6600 pci-e and the other runs Ubuntu linux with an Nvidia 6200.

I'm using the either the latest release or one back on the windows machine.
Ubuntu machine is using the nvidia glx drivers from the Ubuntu repository.

Are you running SoD in full screen mode? If so does it do this if you run it using EQ Windows as well?

I'm using Windows XP Pro SP1 for the OS, and it occurrs in EQW, without EQW in fullscreen and windowed modes. :( I dusted out the pc and left the case off to see if maybe it was heat-related but it doesn't appear to have helped.

First off I'd HIGHLY recommend upgrading to SP2 for Windows XP as that fixed a LOT of bugs and security issues.

Secondly, try running it with EQWindows and see if it still happens. If it does not happen then it's due to the old client going in to full screen mode, it's not telling Windows XP to reset to your original desktop, SP2 might correct that issue though.

Updated to SP2 and it gives me new descriptions of the crash -- though it still happens in EQWindows.

The error I get when I'm dumped to 640x480x4bit is "Display Driver Stopped Responding.. nv4_disp display driver has stopped working normally.." etc. When I restart I am given the following error log info:

BCCode : ea BCP1 : 867E5DA8 BCP2 : 869706E8 BCP3 : 86BBF980
BCP4 : 00000001 OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 2_0 Product : 256_1

If you haven't already try re-installing your video drivers. If you already have and you're confident that isn't the issue:

Locate your EQCLIENT.INI file in your SoD directory and delete it, then restart SoD.

Just tried this, and just crashed a minute ago. No go. :(

Someone suggested it may be borked vram, but I have no idea if there is a memtest for vram which I could use to confirm or deny that.

No, only in SoD. I can remain logged-in for hours in World of Warcraft or play for hours in Warcraft III or Enemy Territory with no problem at all.

After deleting the EQCLIENT.INI did the video error crash go away? And is it just the second error that you're recieving? Or is it the same crashing problems?

Also, this does point to the video card drivers. If you are using a laptop or a brand named computer, use the drivers they provide for your machine from their website, instead of the direct nVidia drivers.

For example if it's a Dell laptop, just go to their support site and download the most recent drivers for your laptop and use those.

You may also want to un-install the nVidia drivers, go in to Computer Management and delete out your video adapter, reboot, and re-install.

It is the same crashing problem, just a different error message.

It is a home-built PC with a BFG card so unfortunately there are no generic or BFG-specific drivers to try out. I tried removing the device entirely (even physically to check the connectors and such) to no avail.

Thanks for all of the suggestions by the way, keep tossing them at me and I'll keep trying them. :)

Even my drivers are slightly outdated compared to yours. I would re-download the newest drivers from nVidia's website and re-install them. I would also recommend re-installing Direct X. You can also test your system using Start --> Run --> dxdiag

This will test your system to see if there are any problems ... see my screenshot below:

91.47 are the newest I've been able to find, and I've uninstalled/reinstalled them a few times now along with DirectX. dxdiag didn't provide any warnings or errors, but the crashing is still happening in SoD. :( The randomness of it throws me off. I can be leveling for hours in Blackburrow without a problem before it crashes, or I can have just logged in for 20 seconds to check list mail and have it crash immediately.

Are you using the default UI? Or a Custom UI? If you're using a Custom UI then try using the default and see if you still have problems.

Only other thing I can recommend is run the SoD Patcher, click Advanced, Click Repatch All, then Click Patch and Run to make sure you have all the newest files up to date.

Have you noticed any form of pattern in this? Like which zones it happes in, whose in zones, what models the zones use. Try disabling the texture cache option and enable/disable luclin models.
