What makes this game tick?

Hey everyone. Im an old fan of EverQuest but I stopped playing after the release of the Luclin expansion. It just ruined the game for me =(

I was wondering, what makes THIS game tick? Is this game completely written from scratch or is it an altered version of the original EverQuest source code? Im really curious about the mention of this game being like a custom EverQuest.

How did the Winter's Roar project start? Was it a hobby or professionally done?

Am I to once more spend countless hours sitting in front of my computer moniter lost in a new "reality"?

Im so excited to learn more about this game and I can't wait to try playing it.

Thanks for your time everyone!

WR is based off the EQemu emulator, but nowadays almost everything except the very basic networking and threading routines is custom code. It essentially started off because I have a fascination with taking existing games and concepts and modifying them as I see fit. Before WR, I ran a bunch of UO emulators, and have essentially dabbled in map making and emulation for as long as I've played computer games.

The majority of the code, content and whatnot of WR is my personal work, though a large portion also comes from other staffers like Wany, Kathgar, Nuralia, Mystianna, and so on. It's only more recently that I'm not the only person making quests, for example (much <3 to our QDs).

You could say it's a hobby, yes, though it certainly is a hobby that has consumed thousands of hours of work. And to your last question, I believe the answer is: Yes.

Wow that's pretty cool stuff. My parents are deleting my old EQ account which holds so many memories to me because its still costing money =(
But this looks very interesting.
When did this custom EQ idea become public? This is the first I ever heard of it. Feels like I just crawled out from under the World of Warcraft rock. Oh, wait, I did! I got bored of the game lol.
I dunno if I can afford losing so much more of my life again (5 years EverQuest. Played WoW since beta and EQoA in beta)

Talk to you later guys,

WR has been around for at least 3 years. But it's recently getting very popular as Sony fsks up McQuaid's game more and more.
