Viruses Caused by Shards

My parents are under the impression that online games, such as Shards, or Everquest. Will open your computer to viruses and open your information to people all over the internet. I know that this cant happen unless you give someone your information an whatnot. i just want some of you to re-assure me and back me up against my parents. They blame all of the problems with our computer on me and Shards so... Let me know if what they think is true.

PS- They said the guy who fixes the computer told them that.

-Thanks everyone

It's true. Don't let your kid play this game; it installs viruses and it will steal your credit card information.

Just like Pictochat :psyduck:

edit: ok on a more serious note.

the guy who fixes your computer? gosh he must know alot :haw: Actually i am that kind of guy and i can assure you that SoD or Game willl never hurt your computer, give your parents something else to worry about ...like the welfare system or global warming

The Truth: If you have a machine connected to the internet, no virus blocker, spyware scanner or bottles of holy water will stop a determined hacker from turning your machine into his own personal toy, your mom checking out websites on Jesus is just as much of a threat as EQ or anything else.

The Reality: Even hackers have standards and I am sure a server of 500 or so people is not on the top of their list as a good starting point to spread viruses. Your parents concerns are valid yet entirely unfounded and I'd say you have a better chance of getting a virus doing online research for your homework then playing SoD.

Hope this long and drawn out reply helps.

that doesn't necessarily mean you're not at fault though! what ELSE do you do besides SoD when you're not playing... or maybe even while playing... hmm? hmm?

No computer expert here or anything..

But isn't SoD like server (the Game, WoW anything else of its nature) very very very hard for a hacker to spread virus throw due ot how it all works (encrypted code of program for a very specfic nature).

I'll start with Virus and think of it more as Plague.

In which case Dark Rot seemed to spread rather freely. DAMN YOU, HACKERS!

If we can blame Dark Rot on hackers, then I'm also blaming them for me contracting Rotting Plague, Wetlung, and Blackbloat in the span of 5 seconds when disease spreading was first implemented.

Damn hackers.

That's it, i'm getting rid of my computer tomorrow.

Thanks for a fun game and all, too bad i didnt get to know you better. :(

Seriously, shut up.

This is pretty much the truth, and essentially I can't blame the supporter for saying so. Whenever I go out and fix people computers, if I don't know any software that looks shady, I will essentially tell them that there's a possibilty that the software could cause virus (such as playing on non-legit servers on WoW etc.). But I usually investigate what exactly it is, and if it looks like anything near SoD, I'll also tell them that it's extremely unlikely.

The only online games that cause problems would be those wierd shockwave download games like the diner dash and bejeweled and such from random 'gaming' websites that you pay for. They like to put adware in there for some reason. My mother loves them and always runs into adware problems.

Your biggest risk for a virus would be from limeware and other p2p programs. I've never had any problems whatsoever with SoD or similar games causing any sort of security problems. Hell, you don't even need to open any ports.
