Two-Boxing Questions

Can someone please explain to me how Two-Boxing works?

I know that it is having two accounts and you play them at the same time. However, my question is how?

Do you have two monitors set up with a KVM switch? Have two physical computers, keyboards, monitors, etc.?

Or would you simply alt-tab between characters?

I would imagine playing in this fashion is remarkably more difficult than merely playing one character. But I understand two-boxing is a lot easier for completing quests that finding a group for is difficult.

Sorry for the noob post, I was jsut curious.

Uhh it really doesn't matter. Some people use two moniters but I just alt + tab

Just make sure the two charectors are on two different accounts

Two boxing isn't to bad, however I find its helpful if at least one toon can take a beating if need be while your on the other toon.

Two different computers FTW. It only take a little while to get used to it. After that I think you'll love it. My main problem that lasted about a week was grabbing the wrong mouse for the wrong toon LOL. :psyduck:

Works for me...

Yea, this is very true. Sometimes it's nice when it's hard to find a group and you have an effective duo. I personally like to single box (alt-tab ftw), but started my first year of SoD two boxing a warrior and a mage. My hubby boxed a Druid and a Ranger, so we always had a ready made group. Once you get into the higher end raid game, it's just more fun to single box, IMO.

I actually like boxing on raids. When I don't box I tend to get bored just pressing the same macros over and over. Some people like the alt + tab way of boxing. I have to say that I by far prefer to do it on two difference machines. It's just really nice to be able to do things on both toons and the same time if need be. :keke:

I'm forced to bot on raids...

AltTabbing works great. I've always two boxed and never had 2 computers. If you have 1+Gig of ram and a 128mb+ video card even crap PCI you can 2 box EQ. It makes life a lot easier especially if you can't find groups lower level. It also helps finding a group when have a bot.

I think this depends on what you're playing. I box a Warrior and a Cleric on raids, and single boxing either one on *most* encounters just gets boring. There are certainly a number of the more interesting encounters where it's much better (and not at all boring) to single box, but these are the exception rather than the rule (at least through the mid-tiers that I've experienced).

While this works adequately, I've recently upgraded from 1G to 2G and it makes a HUGE difference in performance zoning and logging.

I two-box on the same computer, but you can set any key you want to be the switch between EQWindows instances, instead of using alt-tab (which can get annoying if you have any other windows open). I have mine set to ` (tilda key). I much prefer two-boxing. That way I'm always doing something.

This is very true. As an aside, I go OLS too often to be held accountable for two key classes like you and Tempus do. It's a drawback of getting old I guess... :keke:

On-line sleeping. =P It's where your face hits the keyboard and you get a waffle print mid raid, only to wake up and realize your guild has moved on to another target hours ago... (amirte Aulian? :keke: )

Gosh, if you're old, that makes me ancient. :(

How does one obtain a bot? I am very curious as I'd like to run a second character with me to help me level, since I'm new, have nothing tweaked, and have played for 2 weeks not having one group.

If someone can let me know where I can get some sort of automated thing to assist me, that would be awesome.... All I can find are pay sites, or bots buy only? Or are they not allowed? I assume they are since you mentioned using them. I also read not to afk with them, but that's a given....

Any help is much appreciated

What people mean by using bots is they are playing a character that is not their own, but is a key class and is needed. Sometimes this term is interchanged with "boxing a toon", meaning they are playing two characters at once. The second toon may or may not be their own.

WE DO NOT ALLOW THIRD PARTY "BOTS" OR PROGRAMS to help further your character or account in any way. There are many measures taken to prevent and monitor for them, and it is a bannable offense if anyone is caught using them.

Alt Tab FTW ... I have a second box I could set it up on but it would take more to do it that was imo.

If your going to run them on the same box you should

- if you have duel core set each one to run on it's own
- Run Eqw will save you from alot of crashs (my experance anyhow)
- Eq playnice will help it to run much smoother.

you have to have a Fairly nice system to do this in the first place at least to be effective at it.

Yo step by step instructions on setting this up? I just use alt tab but want to try this.

Need to use EQW for that , which is an option when you launch SodPatcher.
Setting a key for EQW to switch windows can be done by editing the EQW.ini file (must be in the EQW directory which should be near the Sodpatcher files). The part looks like

ReleaseMouse=Ctrl Alt R
ReloadIni=Ctrl Alt I
EQWSwitch=Ctrl Alt S

-"release mouse" is a way to switch ingame cursor to the windows cursor, and then do something unrelated with the game (good example is when you manage to keep your EQW client just on top of the windows taskbar, then you can use your Quicklaunch icons, start menu etc...)
-"EQWSwitch" is what we're talking of. Ifyou have two versions of EQW loaded (your two clients) then you'll be able to switch from one to another - provided none is zoning ;) if one of the client is zoning, you can't use the combination key hence you have too use Alt-tab (which doesn't work on all PCs, it's known you need XP SP2 and potentially a small Microsoft utility, check the technical forum about this particular problem).
I set this to ctrl-x so just replace "Ctrl Alt S" to "Ctrl X". Change it as you like, maybe pay attention not to use an in-game combination key.
