Trio Information for New and Returning Players Needed

Hey Guys!

I'm returning to the game and bringing along a friend. I was hoping someone could give us insight on a good class combo based on what we want to accomplish and any changes that have occurred in my 3 year absence.

My friend and I really like doing dungeons and 6man raid like content, especially with just us two. I would be boxing and he would be playing just his char. The only class that is set in stone is cleric because I used to have a T8 cleric and will use that as my box once we hit 65. Our biggest limitation will be that we wont have much time to raid and so relics would be the highest spell type we could get.

I was thinking about SK(me)/BST(friend)/CLR(me). SK as a tank choice was for splitting. BST was chosen because we need slow but we also need dps. On our way to 65 I will probably play a druid so things are more convenient.

Any thoughts on this?

Later on I'm hoping he becomes more comfortable with the game and can box as well. I have a raid geared Mage (t6) and Wiz (t8) that would help a lot on damage when we want to move on to even harder content.

Thanks in advanced.

Slow is pretty overrated, auxing will reduce mob damage more than slow will. SK/CLR + any DPS would work pretty well. Necromancer would be great because they have high DPS, high sustain, can help split, can mez, can give mana back via mindwrack on certain mobs, they can solo in case you arent around.

Your friend could also roll a bard or mage and that would probably work better than a bst.

I played this game one time thinking I wasn't going to duo box.

Then a week went by.

I duo boxed. So will your friend. Have him box a bard or something that can be pretty useful even if its just on autofollow.

I solo played a warrior. Going back I should have made a partner class, anything to go with it.

I'm with Tevinter on SK/CLR/NEC, then go with ludo and add the afk autofollow bard. He'll come in useful later on even if you leech xp him up.

Great advice so far, I didnt realize how effective Aux tanking was. I'm guessing the combination of the Nec pet and SK (pet too?) will create a pretty effective aux until higher levels? Is slow less useful than it was before (i.e. Is a 50% slow not really a 50% damage reduction)?

When we hit max level as the NEC/SK/CLR combo and want to try a higher tier 6 man dungeon will we need slow then in addition to aux ? If so would it be better to recruit a slower or have a bard/bst as my friends box instead? My main worry is that hes not very good at multi-tasking and I was hoping to just give him a wizard with a cast macro so he only needed minimal effort to box.

Are there any legal programs you can use to lessen the effort on whichever char you box?

slow is so lackluster that when people ask me to slow i just say i did it in vent and nobody questions whether it is actually slowed or not but on mob engage(no aux yet) the tank gets made to look like a little bitchbaby in a paper dress

That's pretty hilarious. I figured slow would be a requirement in all raids (even 6 man ones). But if I can keep the tank up with aux and 1/2 healers then I guess its better to just have more utility/dps.

It's required in 18 mans, and required in 6 mans til you're a really high tier. But past a certain point it sucks pretty hard on sod :(

I almost never slow playing my pal/shm. The added dps from damage shield out ways the damage done. That said, sometimes on named or harder mobs I do slow (and in raids.) It can make the difference, but on 99% of xp content it is a waste of mana.

I wonder if I could get my friend to play a bard as a box and just run songs. Would it be feasible to just have his bard with auto follow singing PBAOE slow? Or does that not work very well?
If that did work, at least we would have slow on harder named encounters.

I think you'll have to recast your slows and such after every fight. I played a bard to like tier 4 and if I recall correctly you do get an AoE slow, but its still targeted AoE, so when your target dies the spell stops.

Melody songs will keep playing until you get stunned or cancel it, those include beneficial songs like haste and mana regen and stuff. Those you could keep playing at all times. Fuwok brought up a good point that I didn't even think of - having that 4th person in the party even if he's AFK won't slow down your overall xp, but it will at the very least give you a 4th class option to play later on when he leech XPs his way up. Not boxing something / anything would literally be a waste, even if the box sits AFK the entire time.

I'd recommend your friend play a ranger, and box the bard (on follow) for songs. If you really need slow (or mez), the bard can do it. But his buff songs will totally help you the whole way. I love my beastlord, and the idea of the class, but they are sadly at the bottom of the dps pile.

It's too bad your friend doesn't box. My wife and I play together a lot. I play paladin/enchanter while she plays cleric/druid. We have all the buffs we need (Raego, WoN, SSS, JB, SW, SoS, Haste, DS, FoE), slows, heals, cc, tank and ports. While druid + enchanter dps leaves a bit to be desired, we have learned to box these well and I continue to be impressed at what we can handle on our own - I look for ways to test our limit all the time.

A good duo to add to your cleric would be a tank (I'd go SK since you can cast a couple of spells and have good enough aggro to focus on a box for pretty much the rest of the fight) and any good dps class such as wizard, necromancer or ranger (I'd probably go necro since they also add some ability to cc and can flop if/when things ... go awry).

For sure I will be playing a SK / Clr combo at 65. I'm hoping I can convince my friend to box. If so I was thinking he mains a bard and uses my T10 Wizard as a box (for dps, simplicity, and ports). That way we get the lovely resist buffs, slow, and mez from the bard and I feel like that would be better than BST. I like this combo over Nec/Brd because of the pre-geared wizard and superior dps, but I will miss the ability for Nec to flop and res our group on wipes.

I'd love to hear peoples thoughts, this has been a great thread for ideas.

There was a very similar thread to this a while back, someone asking for thoughts on an ideal makeup with 2 people boxing. A lot of good opinions there:

Honestly I think you're on the right direction. Tank + Cleric + Porter (wiz/druid) + Last spot. Nec or brd are both strong choices imo. I guess having a slower is good, but most mobs mitigate slow so much that normally aux tanking (having someone attack from the front) can do more than slow.
For the last spot you can pretty much go anything really. Ranged dps would be easy for boxing, melee dps would be good for loot distribution. Shaman would be a strong choice (having backup heals is good). Bard is good for boxing.

It also depends on what you want when you're 65, of if you care to do stuff at 65. If you're looking for the "ultimate lv 65 box team" i would probably go with a backup healer sadly. If you're looking to raid stuff later, tanks are the hardest to catch up, everyone always needs clerics and druid is probably the most common class due to the flexibility of a druid box (ports/buffs/heals/tracks)

Also it depends on what your friend wants to play ;) That normally helps. If you have the tank/cleric/porter in your setup you could get away with pretty much anything.
