Tradeskill Economy: Mining and Jewelcraft

I did a search and didn't see any mention of this, so I thought I'd post. Please shut this thread down if this has been discussed before. Miners pretty much only supply blacksmiths with ore, but I think it would be sweet if mining took on a larger role in the game. Right now it looks like the major metals for jewelcrafting are silver, electrum, gold, and platinum. Miners can already mine silver, but there are no molds for blacksmiths to create silver bars. If electrum, gold, and platinum could be replaced with dalium, mithril, and obsidian (or if the entire jewelcraft metal range could be expanded to include all mined metals), I think it would mean good things for the entire player economy. There's probably a ton of hassle involved in this, but it would enrich the trade skill system a bit. Miners produce ore which is processed through blacksmithing into ingots for armor/weapons or bars for jewelcrafting. I'm sure a process of refining ores similar to making ingots could be used to create bars. How much ore constitutes a bar is definitely a matter for debate, though. If I'm out of line on this, please just bin this post. Thanks

It had been discussed to mine the occassional gem before, but no one had mentioned metal for jewellery that I recall.

If you were able to mine ore, then refine it, you would have to make sure the end product was not NPC sellable the way gold bars etc are now but still usable in the recipes.

Kind of like miners turn rocks into mineral dust etc. Saves a little money and cuts cost.

I think this is a great idea. As a miner I think it would be nice to have mining branch into other tradeskills aswell. And it makes perfect sense for miners to be able to mine silver, gold, platinum, and even jewels. I would support this and really like to see this idea implemented.

This is how it should be to begin with, but I'm going to assume that it's been discussed in the past amongst staff and if it's not in by now.. it never will be. I suppose I could be wrong, but I'd be really surprised if I am. Seems like the first thing you would think of regarding mining in a game is GOLD GOLD GOLD AND MORE GOLD. But that's just me, perhaps.

Seems pretty reasonable. Of course it would have to be worth it. Also I would suggest slightly different equipment for it, as there is no reason to make the process of getting ore for blacksmithing (as you already require a ton of it to do even the lowest levels) more painful. Which splitting up the types of material you would get from mining regularly would do. Something like a metal pick with a different click effect so it just goes after jewelry metal, etc.

I would suggest actually replacing a portion of the rocks with refinable ore of various types, varying by zone. For instance, in areas you get Iron/Copper ore you mine Silver. Where you get silver ore for smithing you mine electrum for jewellery. Maybe 20-40% of the rocks switched out, with adjustments being made for the skill in mining.

The electrum, gold, and platinum veins wouldn't have to be in the existing veins. It would probably be better if new veins were put in for these metals. Maybe even have a pan that you'd have to use in the shallows of some of Dalaya's rivers to find metal nuggets or dust; off of the top of my head, I'd say Great Divide and Sundered Mountains have the right kind of shallow river. (I don't know if that would mean implementing an entirely new skill or if that would count as mining too.)

I like the idea of panning for stuff quite a bit.

What about having to wear specific prospecting gear to find only jewelcrafting materials instead?
Eg. wearing monocles and a hand pick to meticulously dig through existing veins?

Existing veins should not be swapped out to give the addition of jewel crafting metals. Although adding new veins for Gold or Platinum, and even having a completely separate skill to pan rivers for jewelry metals sounds quite nice. Having these metals be tagged to not allow NPC merchants to buy them will work quite well as that way you need to sell them to Jewel Crafters, and as such being a metal purchased from merchants, it would allow for these metals to be sold under merchant price and never being able to go above it.

This would allow for Jewelry to go down in price without actually cutting into the profits of Jewel Crafters who have spent countless platinum being able to make good money off of their efforts, while allowing people with thiner wallets to afford the resulting ring, earring, etc...

Also, if there is a significant process to refine the metals into bars for jewelry, it will be more of an incentive for miners to start getting into blacksmithing.
