to help or not?

Solo

Dalayan Adventurer
Hiyas,
I’ve been playing this game for about 4 weeks now…lots of fun thx. I do have a few questions now. They deal with the assistance or the lack there of or the way giving assistance is frowned upon by some.  I view the last attitude as counter productive to the game and community as a whole.

specific examples:

Why is it when we have 168 ppl in game and I ask this question a few times “How do I setup listsold items at the bank?”  no one answers me.  And when I complain that we have 168 ppl on and no one will help I get jailed for an hour?
(i found the list info on the forums)

I’m running thru nbl and I see a grp of lower lvls camping the bandits…I sow them all…another high lvl player see it and complains to me that I should not do that… I mean c’mon lol

A few more silly things too

Did I miss something when I read the rules about not calling out ppl to help?
If so let me know.

Well, as for the first one...

Whining isn't well tolerated.

If you were asking in /gu (and your part of the starting guild) then I'm suprised someone didn't answer you, I know many players often answer newbish questions there. If you were asking in ooc... they probibly just told you to read the forums or the wiki. =P

Can't say as I'd complain if someone stopped by and started handing out random buffs... but thats just me.

- - -For the first part, I would say that is clearly explained in the Tome of Knowledge section (if someone feels lazy over reading it there, just think about how the playerbase can feel about saying the same thing again and again) and that whining in /ooc is out of place since it NEVER helps, no matter if you've got good reasons for it.
- - -About the second part... wow, it looks to me like science-fiction at least. Why the hell should anybody complain about you SoWing any character? In case somebody didn't want that buff, they just have to click it off. . .

Is it possible that they were going to get an assistance penalty on experience from you Sowing them?

This is correct, SoW will give an assistance penalty, and if you Cast SoW 6 times you just negated pretty much all the exp they would get on whatever mobs they where fighting at the time.

Also the same noobish questions get asked repeatedly(literally hundreds of times) and most players are tired of it when the answers are there for new players to see for themselves.

check all of the forum stickies, /cm help normal, and the wiki and most likely you will find your answer.

You got jailed because you were being rude, insulting and demanding. Noone has an OBLIGATION to answer your questions and that particular question could be answered by reading the forum.

You didn't ask why noone would help you, you berated everyone for not helping you.

Learn the difference.

I usually will help people when they ask, and I was online at the time when you did ask your question in ooc. I overlooked it, though, as I was busy playing my character, and I seen your SoD-insulting comment and jail-sentencing.

Some people leave Dalaya's Beginners way too early, and then get upset with anyone that does not give them full attention, step-by-step & how-to directions when they "need help". You could have asked again and I am sure someone would have pointed you in the right direction- I know I would have, had I clearly seen your question.

/cm help normal for a list of commands. Check out the Tome of Knowledge forum- it has a lot of SoD-information.

And to keep with your topic, I will tell you a story that I have:

I am about to run through blackburrow when I see a necromancer fighting a single gnoll at the entrance. I target the necro and he has 20% health and declining. I target the gnoll and it has 50% health. Knowing that necromancers can lifetap, I decide that I would stand-by and see if that necromancer would need a hand.

A second gnoll spawns and agros the necromancer, so I quickly dispatch of it, and I am promptly insulted by the necromancer who surely, from my view, would have died had I not intervened.

Some people are just jerks. But I do not blame SoD.

I give out sow as I run around with my shaman and nobody has ever complained about it. One thing I do though is look and make sure they aren't actually fighting anything at the moment before I cast... That way I don't give them an xp penalty on the fight.

Regardless of what people say, I help people all the time in ooc. People in general help people in ooc.
Anyways, it does get kinda old answering the same questions all the time which are covered quite clearly in the forums.
For you to jump the gun and assume the entire server is rude is absurd

Indeed speak for yourself, I was helping noobs quite often when I was in the area, like taking lowbie groups through the warpstone spawns w/ais, telling them what drops, various rescues while running through bb to everfrost (zomgz 2 many pulls, wait wtf is that thing fwomp fwomp), various items of summony goodness, etc. As for questions it depends on when and where you're asking. Dbeginners is actually one of the better places to ask "noobish" questions, while you may get a bunch of people who don't actually know what they're talking about, alot of the time you also get 65 players bored and on their alts answering, and staff looks in every once in a while too. Also a large number of people tend to answer those questions through tells, if you were tellbugged by any chance...you wouldnt know if anyone did. So generally just check on that beforehand by a /who all *whatever your toons nick is*.

Even at higher levels I've seen friendly help just as often as I've seen quasi if not outright assholic behavior. It just depends on who's nearby and what their mood is. Got a group with no rezzer and there happens to be a group nearby with one, more often than not they've taken the time to rez my group after a fight (though then again I can summon dots so it generally helps if I ask :D lol). Same with very badly going named fights ex: archmage beating the snot out of someone testing his difficulty, zomgz guys get im' *pound pound blasty pound* "phew, you ok?" rez rez. Though there seems to be alot more of a community thing once you hit the higher levels, as most of your bad players (not as in they suck, but referring to their attitude) tend to get ignored for groups etc etc and eventually quit playing.
As for the sow thing it depends on why he was saying you shouldnt. If he was saying umm you're messing up their xp, then yeah, you probably shouldnt. But then its just a matter of waiting a few seconds and then sow after combat if you really wanna do it.

But to add I helped people in ooc quite often, but generally I sent tells. Questions do get rather old sometimes though, especially the listsold ones. They've just been asked so so so sooooo many times. There are quite a few people who actually have information of that nature just macroed lol.

but but guys the 4 or so people who were watching OOC at the time of my queries surely must be representative of the entire server!!!

right?

im pretty sure im right
