The Evils of Backgearing

i guess but that nerd would usually have to be a cleric or enchanter (almost no one wants to main these (not even me (we have 1 active cleric who is mained and 0 enchanters (it's the same in most guild (brackets)))))

Last night in Tower of Tarhyl, my guild took down some t9 mobs. In that wing, there was a large chest. When opened, the loot was horrible imo. It was like t4, way below even t7 (like the Lobby would be). For our worst characters, it was not even remotely an upgrade (we are back-gearing about 4 characters). Making like t7ish loot drop there would have potentially given us an upgrade. I'm assuming that the chests are the same (drop the same loot), no matter what wing they pop in, so adding backgearing-type gear in ToT would probably be better suited to having the trash mobs as a source.

I think the stuff that comes out of those chests and occasionally drops from trash(?) in ToT is just old loot from when ToT was tier 4/5 a million years ago.

Well that being said that is a real issue with a lower population server. And having it easier to box a old already geared toon vs recruting a new player gearing them up and teaching them the strats.
This is matter of guild prefrence not so much a game flaw. I have 100+ days played on my druid and I still only have like 6.3k mana all my good aa's and about 1.6 Codex of power done. Getting people cought up to all of those people that have 40 tomes done and completely decked out gear is going to take a long time.

Now for a complete sidetrack
Low gain of new players 1-65 crew makes the players initial starting time in SOD lonly and boring. A Fix getting higher gier toons to twink lower level toons and re level 1-65 would be a great idea to suplament real new players in the lower levels.
The adepts are great entertainment for rerolling and the gear being expable is awesome. However I think the low end game can still use some more work.

Methods to keep the low level game full.
Allow Low level expable gear to be treated like farming aa's (EXP able gear gains exp while exp lock is on)

Better SoD promo videos/Advertising. TBH Just make a post on the forums to have every one get together for a giant Promo video for SOD. Get some War screen shots and some raids on differnt tiers. PVP fights in an area and some of the 6 man exp zones. Get a lowbie adept raid. Throw in some kick'n Phantasy music or if you can any Nastalgic EQ midi files I think there is some copy rights on that though.

Easier to learn interface and more accessable information. Yes the forums are a great source of information but I just don't feel like that cuts it. Maybe give new players a KEY that ports them to a house while in town that has NPC's that have all kinds of information.

Dalaya's Beginniers Daily MOTD helpfull hints.

Just some ideas but yeah completely De-railed this post

pug loot ahoy
Would it be possible to add in something like the cousin of the diversity bonus where for trash loot it checks guild tags and if you're under 3/4th with the same tag it stops these items from dropping?

Not to mention the inevitable forum code to filter "my guild doesn't raid X zone any more and I can't pug it to get Y piece of gear I need because it's best in slot and that's all anyone cares about"

Possible.

Would anyone (i.e., me) want to put in the work to code something so lame? Not likely.
It would kind of be surplus loot on top of what already exists so I didn't think it would be that lame to give preference to guilds (who progress as an entity) over pugs but really I am satisfied with any outcome, it was just an idea I had.

Well that's easy you just don't make any of the items the best for their slot. That would already be partially handled by setting the quality of the drops to a tier or so below whichever zone they drop in.

Maybe you don't understand the flavor of chests. The point is that Tower of Tarhyl was a t4ish raid zone back in the day when Wiz made it. When Woldaff revamped it he put all of the old mob loot in the chests for flavor. It's meant to make the game more interesting, not to mention there are a couple unique items that are in those chests, like a 3.1 percussion mod drum. Bring your new level 65s to pop chests or something.

Well, alrighty then. It's just that I don't have any lowbie alts that I care about and neither does most of my guild, and it'd be awkward and inefficient to invite some random newbies to go up there. It's nifty to look at some of the old items, though, and ponder what the old days may have been like!
