Teaching People About Adepts

So a way to find out about unique SoD mechanics in-game would not make the game better for new players? And we want more new players, right?

So I am suggesting a way to do that.

Instead of telling the newb to STFU and RTFM, which is essentially what most of you of dissenting opinion are advocating (instead of actually answering their question/s when they ask, which is what some of you are telling ME to do and not actually willing to do it yourself). So, thanks...

Ya, who WOULDN'T like if everyone read everything on the boards and didn't have to ask questions? I sure as heck would too - then this would never have been an issue I would be suggesting doing something about. BUT THEY DON'T. AND I PLAY WITH THEM (and you do too, at some level).

You can't deal with the world how you wish it was (they *should* be doing this. Ex. people *shouldn't* commit crime, so we'll just tell them not to / to read the laws). You need to take it as it is and make it better from there (so we made a police force and judicial system).

A bit over the top on the analogy there.

Commercial MMORPG's can't afford not to cater to players who don't give enough of a crap to learn anything on their own. SoD isn't so much saddled with that concern and has the luxury of a more dedicated player base as a result.

I'm all for drawing in more players, but one player is not necessarily as good as another, IMHO.

To be accurate, the Devs did not make the wiki.

Err, sorry. Right, they didn't. We as a player base did. Thanks.

You just said two different points that have nothing to do with each other. We do want this game to be VERY fun/good for newbies, heck, I'm still a newbie. However, adding a quest to inform newbies (who are, quite frankly, too lazy to check the wiki/forums) about Adepts won't lure more people to SoD..

So I am suggesting a way to do that.

I have never seen (that I remember) telling/seeing someone tell a newbie to 'stfu' regard adepts. The usual response is "check forums".

So, thanks...

Right..so the forums are here to inform them the information regarding the adepts..

Apparently exaggeration does not go over well here.

If there has been no official response to this thread by now, I don't expect there to be one. And I don't feel like bantering back and forth with people who can't change things anyway.

Well, I'm done.

I thought you made very valid points

When I first started playing I had no idea wth the wiki was... I'd ask a question in /ooc and rarely someone would give a straight answer... their favorite thing would be to say, "check the wiki" and I was too embaressed then to ask a not-so-newb-friendly crowd what that was. I made it a point to go out of my way to answer any questions that I knew the answers to in /ooc and the forums (once I found those too, lol), so that I could be a part of the solution. :p I think Thinkmeats was the one to nickname me the "Helpy Helper" because of it, lol! :keke:

"and I was too embarrassed to ask not-so-newb-friendly crowd what that was" ...now, I understand that. I had a bit of that myself. But, isn't that your own fault? Note, I'm NOT slamming - I'm just being blunt.

It seems like people just need to be 'bold' and ask questions, and to check the website/wiki for information.

Well I asked my husband when he got home what a wiki was and he gave me the SoD forums and wiki links, so it's not like I had to press the issue in /ooc. =P

I think what avid gamers forget is that some people who come to learn about SoD have never gamed before let alone used forums or wikis. Those types of people wouldn't think much of the fact that they don't actively visit them. I'm not saying they are right or you are right with your train of thought, I'm just putting that point out there...

To address the OP's idea, I'm not sure what else can be done to enlighten those who are new to the game. We have a beginner's guild, a beginner's guide stickied in the tome of knowledge, a player updated wiki, and a pretty in depth in game tutorial (aka the dream) for new players already.

To me, even getting the files, repatching, etc to even get to PLAY SoD takes alot more knowledge and time than to check on a wiki..

that is very *different* knowlege and time. Lots of people know how to install a program and follow directions - who were not previously a part of messgae boards, or come across a wiki before. First if it weren't for abreviations it would be easier to find out on your own anyway, but no one ever told me to go look on the sodwiki and even if you knew what a wiki was how the hell would you think to find it on angrygamer.net/sodwiki For these reasons I try to stay and greet people in the introductions thread so if there are specific things brought up I can find links for them to use.

Joe, don't be a prick if you don't want to bother answering questions then ignore them, Jayelle is right after asking a question in ooc and getting embarassed by the smart ass people around here most new players would just give up. Being "blunt" here is only a thin disguise for not wanting to bother with new players.

I'll tell you a secret... you can't know what you don't know. Asking questions is how people learn. There are very few lazy ones in the mix who won't read to save their lives don't treat everyone that way.

most would be happy to be told CLEARLY where to find information without having to look stupid in ooc with people telling them that the no drop head they just found was for so and so's shoulders - and still coming away with no answers.

Our new front page helps a lot, if you click enough times you get a link to the wiki and will point people to the forums, as well as other easliy found links now. I think making sure adepts are listed in the knowlege base as it becomes available would be a nice middle of the road solution. It would be easier to refer someone to a simple to find (as opposed to searching forums) and would allow a very simple, go to the main page and follow the links there to get the information on the adepts.

for the original poster, In the meantime - a hotkey is a good idea. You can make one for /reply and one for /ooc and simplify things for yourself a lot.

It is different, aye, and I can see how it could be confusing for someone to never know what it is (IE: my first experience with a wiki was here in SoD), but people could just do what I did...either ask in-game/forums or just look for it yourself - it isn't difficult.

I'm sorry..what questions? If you're talking about people in OOC, I do love to help them. If they ask a question about a quest, and I'm not familiar with that specific quest, I'll OOC, "Check the wiki." If they don't know what the wiki is, I'll reply, "Its on the website under knowledge base." Or something to that extent. Please don't call me a prick.

I totally agree!

This is just my point:

I don't get its completely necessary for the DEVs to make a quest concerning Adepts. Its clearly listed on the SoDWiki, Dalaya's Beginners also clears up that fog too for newbies. If that isn't enough, I'm sorry.
