Starting a Server

Faldorth

Dalayan Beginner
At college I am unable to play Shards of Dalaya because the net is so incredibly stupid,
and my school does everything in their power to avoid fixing the problem. However,
the LAN works incredibly fast, and I was wondering how exactly I can get some type of LAN
Shards of Dalaya, EQ, or EQemu server up and running for just the people who want to play on campus,
but aren't able to on regular net. If anyone could help me out with this, that would
be friggin fantastic.

;(

Alternatively, if you're desperate you could shell out for dialup into your dorms. EQ doesn't eat much bandwidth, and while you wouldn't be able to DC, you'd be able to play well enough. I wouldn't pay more than $10/mo for dialup (ironically similar to the cost of a normal mmo); netzero's treated me right in the past, whereas peoplepc absolutely sucks and you should never ever go to them. There still exist free dialup services, but they suck really, really badly, and I can't recommend them at all.

Problems

Even though I could use dial-up service through the school, paying roughly 10 bucks a month for dial-up service, I have to dial a number just to reach off campus before dialing the original number so it can charge me 12-25 cents a minute for using the line, which would result in an insane bill :? However, if I could get some help in starting a LAN server for my deprived gamers on campus, that would be supreme. But, if you feel uncomfortable letting me use SoD (I would completely understand), just being given instruction on how to start a LAN mmo server for say, the original version of this mmo, would make life at college a lot less boring. I have an unused server at home and could easily bring it to my dorm and run it. Please help me and my college mmo woes! ;(

Pretty sure you won't be able to use SoD (some folks asked during the period the server was down). I don't know anything about setting up an EQEmu, but here's the site for EQEmu. I'm sure there are instructions there, although I'd imagine you'll have to spend a LOT of time on content.

Another option you might look into, although a bit more expensive than dialup, is a wireless internet service. Verizon was advertising unlimited access for around $60/mo. It would still be much cheaper than school's 12-25 cents a minute, depending how much you play.

Good luck!

Tips

Thanks for the tips guys. Yeah, I figured using the schools connection i'd be getting $300+ bills a month using their minutely rate. I'm tryin to search EQemu for a way to get basic EQ up, but it seems they only have a set up guide for a Linux system, but no guide for setting up a Windows server as of yet. Hopefully I can figure something out, or if the masterminds here at SoD could lend me a hand in server setup instruction depending on the operating system they are using. Hopefully if one of them can give me instructions on how to get a Windows LAN server up for some type EQemu, a lot of people here would be pounding their heads into the walls with excitement. Thanks again guys.

Uh, we do run Windows, but it's honestly been three years and something like four full versions of EQEmu since we set the basic shit up. :(

Awesome

Ah, well I understand the dilemma then from going through 4 full versions of EQemu since the basic setup  However, Elysium that site you gave me seems to be a big help! It has a lot of useful information, and hopefully through their info I can start one of these servers up for my campus. Thanks everyone for the info and for helping me out. Just as much though, I could still use all the info you guys can muster, so if you have any at all please post it!
Thanks again all! :D
