Sprinting

Think it's possible to add an ability or spell called sprint for melee characters?

Refresh timer 10 minutes, gives 20% run speed increase for 5 minutes? (Just something to mess with when traveling)

Don't know the limitations on the emulator for such a thing...but this would be great for melee classes.
 
Kind of like DAOC. I think that would be neat, however I wouldn't think it a melee class thing only....shamans can run...or hop :)
 
I agree here with Raherin. All races should be able to if it was put in. Kind of a nifty idea for travel or escape purposes.

I agree with that...perhaps a "rest" period after the sprint where your stamina will not come back up for a few minutes?

See this is why I like the idea though...you can choose to use it to travel, but if it runs out, you're not jumping for a while. :) But it's also good for an emergency use as well. I definitely don't think it should take the place of SoW or J/Tboots though.
 
No of course not...but it's just something fun and has a little utility to it that I think would be a good addition.
 
DAoC sprinting used endurance and from a full endurance bar 1 min of sprinting would be uber. Most lasted 30 seconds or so. When it ran out, you were just normal running speed, not 'snared' for instance.

However, DAoC used endurance in every combat style and in every spell cast, so it'd be a work out trying to balance that in the EQ world.

Moreover, it never once saved me from harm unless I was in a dungeon, since there's otherwise no 'zoning' on DAoC. Again, in EQ, to remove silliness or general exploiting, we'd have to remove zoning...

Lastly, I never once used it to get somewhere faster. It was pointless. Get a horse (again, not in EQ), or find a bard or other movement speed increase.

My vote is no sprinting. It won't fit. It's conceptually a truckload of work. Wiz probably has better things to do. Like sleeping.
 
Thats for the normal sprinters out there. My Friar had absolutely no run speed buffs, however he did have realm abilities in long wind and other stamina increasing skills. He managed to sprint all the way from the realm fort to camelot at speeds matching that of a bard before he even ran half low on stamina.

I definatly think that the stamina drain should rely on the amount of agility the charactor has, the amount of strength vs the amount of weight they are carrying, and finally the overall endurance number should be based on the endurance of the charactor.

That way nimble charactors with little equipment will be able to run for quite a ways.. as will strong charactors with alot of endurance. I would also love to see an AA for this. And if possible, give some professions innate bonuses to the sprinting skill so long as they have little equipment weighing them down.

Long live running for travel, down with teleportation for the masses!
 
The aa would have to replace another one, like metabolism maybe....whitch reminds me of how cool more aa's would be...like GoD ones /drool, but sorry to get off topic, long live springing!!!!!!!!!!!111

I don't really see agility having anything to do with running. I see stamina and encumberance being the factors in determining your running ability.

The more I think about it though, the more I think it would be unbalancing. Especially in dungeons. Dungeon exp is good because generally speed buffs don't work so it's harder to book out if you need to. Also as a means of travel, it decreases the value of J/T boots, sow, shaman potions, etc.

Just an opinion...
 
You could make a case for stamina or agility...

however, if you think it out. Tanks have the most stamina. Do you really see a fully plated warrior outrunning an agile monk or ranger? I dunno...seems like AGI is the way to go, or like was suggested, encumberance.

What you're describing is encumbrance. There's nothing nimble about running. A baby runs...and let me tell you, they are not nimble. Running is more of a gross motor control function, whereas dodging arrows or other such movie monkly feats would be agility based. :)

As for the warrior having full plate on and running....well if the game was totally realistic a monk punching a warrior in plate would have his hand reduced to a bloody pulp. :)

Not to mention that holding a ton of gear in bunches of backpacks would encumber anyone...so let's skip encumberance except for weight limits. Encumbrance would be a bear to implement and everyone would hate that idea I'm sure.

My final point is this:

What ability do you think marathon runners in the real world have the most of? Agility or Stamina? I know a guy around here who is 80 years old and runs 40 miles a week. He's not the most nimble guy in the world...hehe
 
Then the only fair thing to do would be to give it to everyone. with the same cooldown and short durration, fair is fair.
 
Oh I agree that it shoudl be an ability available to all if they so choose it. But in the overall scheme of things, I just don't see it being something that would be high on the wants list of server features. But if it were very limited and just another little option that didn't unbalance things or trivialize SoW, speed boots, or potions...yeah it could be nice.
 
How about if there were some kind of magical spell or enchantment that makes you run faster? Something like the Spirit of the Polecat, or the Spirit of the Mongoose....or, um - what are those lizards that run around on two legs and they always show them running in slow motion on the TV because they are so fast we can't see them running with the naked eye?

Jesus Lizards? The ones that run on water?
