hey guys, i am thinking of starting on the server but i have a few quick questions if u can help answer, thanks

1) what is the peak users online on a given day?

2) are there people to group with in the lower levels?

3) is rogue a viable choice and can i actually solo if i don't have a group?

4) do rangers meele or use bows??

thanks!

350-400 people peak

Lots of people to group with. However, the range of 24 to the 40s can be a bit sparse currently, if you maintain any standards on groupmates and have an entire guild on the NO list. It moves in cycles.

Rogue is probably not the best choice to solo, but it might be possible. Most people would probably suggest two boxing if you choose to go rogue.

Rangers use both Bow and Melee. I am not certain, and others can answer better, but I believe rangers melee most of the time up to the higher levels, where they can then do higher DPS with Bows.

I started Bowkiting at 12 or so for Mobs I couldn't handle meleeing. Most of the time (blue Mobs) melee though.

Ack, 30 Ranger here btw ;)

P.S. Bowdamage in lower levels is higher than on live I think. Long ago though.

From 1-60 (keep in mind this is about a year ago) I bow-kited solo. Past that has been a mix of melee and bowing. Lately, I've been more melee oriented because (1) its easier to dual client - since there is no ranged auto attack, you have to have your ranger's screen up at all times and be spamming the ranged attack hotkey to achieve maximum efficiency - and (2) you cant bow while tanking. Overall melee and archery are relatively close (with comparable weapons) in terms of DPS (I've found that archery jumps ahead on live mobs, and melee jumps ahead on undead, due to crit rates). However, you may want to check out the balancing forums, as archery may recieve a huge overhaul with upcoming changes to Endless Quiver.

Overall, a ranger is capable of both melee and archery. There are high-end rangers that arch all the time, and those that melee all the time. I'm sure you will be pleased with whatever choice of offense you choose to make :)

If you want to solo, skip the rogue. Unless you have a lot of plat to spend on gear, you're not going to be an effective soloer at all.

Ranger is a pretty good choice to solo with for about 50 somethign levels. Hehe...once you get higher up it could be more difficult to find places outdoors with mobs high enough to exp on, but overall, I think ranger is a good solo choice and good DPS in a group...and occasionally a substitute tank (depending on gear and group mates).

I play a rogue, but not a ranger. My best friend is a ranger though...so that's what my opinion is based on.

thanks for the quick responses guys, it was very helpful! 350-400 is alot ofplayers, i remember when i played on WR way back it had only like 50 max

i guess my choice to play a solo character would probably be monk then... i had a 60 monk back in the kunark days and it has always been pretty fun

a few questions about monks on SoD though

1) weight limit restriction? is the 14 pounds rule still in effect?

2) iksar or human? i had a human one originally, but if i recall correctly iksar fists aren't as good as humans.... but if its the same i'd definitely take iksar for the regen and cooler flying kick ^^

3) can iksars wear plate? (for warriors or sk's i mean)

4) does mend/fd still work like it did on live?

5) SK or monk for soloability? what would you choose? i've never played sk before so if iksars can wear plate, i'd consider playing that too

thanks a bunch

1) Yes.

2) Iksar. Regen. Whether or not fists are less useful is moot considering you'll be using a weapon, undoubtedly.

3) Yeah.

4) Yes. But better. (ie. Mending to 100%)

5) Monks are just beasts, period. Either one can solo.

You could always mend to 100 % on live as well. I think you mean that you can bind wound up to 100 % hp.

Monk Fist Damage Table is the same.

Below are the racial comparisons on SoD:

Humans
Rapid Learning: Humans easily adapt to new situations and are quick to pick up on new skills. Humans gain experience, alternate experience and skills at an advanced rate (+10%).

Iksar
Infravision: Iksars can see in the dark through heat sight.
Regeneration: Iksars have a natural healing ability far surpassing that of most races. They regain health at an increased pace.
Reptilian Mind: Iksars have minds and bodies that require and tend toward large amounts of sleep and long dormant periods. For this reason, Iksars are more vulnerable to Mesmerizing spells, having a decreased chance to resist them.
Cold Blood: Iksars are not emotional creatures, and are slow to both fear and anger. They gain an additional chance to resist Fearing spells.
Dull-Minded: Iksars are not quick to accept new ideas or adapt to new situations. They gain a penalty to acquiring experience and learning skills.(-5 or -10% - not sure)

thats awsome that mend is 100% bind wound too, because i guess i'm preparing for the worse... but 400 people seems like quite alot of people so i guess i shouldn't be worried about not finding a group

anyways, still trying to decide on class right now... monk vs sk, any thoughts would be awsome!

1) monks have 14 pound limit... and if i remember correclt,y it goes up to 24 at 60? however, this means that looting would be very hard because you take a big AC hit.... which means you'll be poorer then lets say an SK who can loot any and everything... how big of a handicap is this with monk as a first character? are there any 100% reduction weight bags? and at what level can these bags be had?

2) which one is more popular? which class has more people playing them? what is group diserability in relation to each other?

3) which one is easier to buy gear for while leveling up? are monk loots very rare to come by?

thanks again guys,

p.s. the fist damage at 65 is pretty good, do most monks use fists at 65?

I would say that SKs are less played than monks, but I am not 100% sure about that. There is lots of gear for both classes, which can be obtained by looting, or questing as you level up. I would say there is less of an abundance of platemail in the early levels though, so that might be hard. But with the introduction of smithing there is certainly an option. There are some 100% weight reduction bags, as well as other weight reduction bags. You can buy two or so of the bags for anywhere from 200-500 plat (alchemist's pouch, burlap sack I think). When I leveled my monk I had a druid that I could loot most stuff with, so I am not too sure of how you would fair if you only played a monk for money that is. Like I said before though, there are lots of drops and quests you can do to gear yourself up. I have noticed alot of monks lately on SoD, but that might just be the time I play at. You should really make whatever class you want to. Monks do more damage, and can tank in certain situations, as well as pull. SKs can tank nearly anywhere, have some pretty nice spells, as well as being able to pull, however they do less damage. Its all really personal preference. If you can't decide on what class to make, you could always make both and test them out to see how you like them. It really doesnt take that long to get to the teens or low 20s.

Also I should note that lately there has been a lack of real tanks mid game. So although monks can tank decently, a SK would probably be more desireable for some groups, as they can tank pretty much anywhere up until you get to the endgame.

Also, at 65 I use my fist mainhand and a Wildstrike Baton in my off hand for the stats. I could use fists for both primary/secondary but I have not parsed my damage in both scenarios. Anyways, there is an abundance of weapons available to monks in the end game, and using fists or weapons is really personal preference as well. Hope this helps.
