Hi all. I'm interested in all your personal reasons for playing this game. I've played most MMORPG's on the market since 1999 or so, and although I've had fun in lots of them, I usually come back to SoD. It's interesting because as time goes on, other games get more and more advanced, and this shows it's age. For example, there are no "Battlegrounds", "arena" matches, flying mounts, ships, the graphics are quite basic and NPC dialogue has to be done with /commands, and there is no world map, etc, etc. So technology wise, it's quite "no frills", and yet, I still prefer it to the other modern games I've played. Of them all, the two that came closest, were Vanguard, and WoW. But with all their fancy graphics and nice modern features, I still come back to SoD for one reason or another, and I often think about why that is. So now I am interested in why you are here.

Personally, my answer is number 3. I *choose* to play it over all the other games, and it's mainly to do with how soloing works in the other games. I find that most MMORPG's have sterilised the gameplay so that you either do "group content", or you do "solo content", and there is no in between - which is a big deal to me.
I find that with this game (and the game it's based on), solo content and group content kind of blends together, and you can sometimes solo group content if you pick stuff that is a bit lower level. And you are therefore not restricted from dungeons etc. I find that exciting and challenging, and being completely alone in a dungeon is great... so eerie, and yet you can make exp at the same time so it's worthwhile. I tried, but couldn't do that in WoW or Vanguard (unless you do stuff that is MUCH lower level). In Vanguard for example, they had the 3 dot 4 dot system and basically made every dungeon mob a 4 dot so you just couldn't realistically solo it. So you could never really go in dungeons, and instead you have to just stay doing the boring over land "solo content", which is basically a matter of just picking off mobs one by one like a shooting gallery, and then performing your same old routine.
And in addition to that, there are the changes to (the game) they made with SoD, like the mail, quests, treasure maps, house of portals, etc. which are all things I really like.

I went from playing Live to DAOC to WR to Live to SoD to WoW to War and now I'm returning to SoD (I'm leaving out the insignificant MMORPGs I played such as Shadowbane, FFXI, etc). Live has always been my favorite commercial MMORPG, and SoD in a way has taken what was done with that game and made even better. Being free isn't a reason I play, although it's a perk (and I urge people to donate), and I'm awaiting Dawntide.

I like sod because for the most part the audience is vastly more mature than that of other online games. Plus, since its a smaller server there seems to be more tight knit relationships between players. Also, being a small server I think more people are respectful and try not to burn as many bridges as they would on live because your reputation certainly follows you throughout your time here.

Plus, the devs are hilarious with some of their events and seem to really enjoy what they do- and it shows in the content they create

Yeah both of those things are a big deal to me too. It's especially noticeable after coming back from other games too.

I would have to agree with the fact that smaller server means better relationships with other players and I also like what the developers have done. Being able to group or solo as you please is a major plus. I like how the trade skills work too. Yea, it is a pain at first to mine ores and smith junk items and stuff, but once you put in the time and the effort, it pays off. I think in a way it's more realistic how it's set up.

im just completely addicted... even when im not having fun, or doing nothing, i sit and play it at least for awhile each day. its sad to be me

lol i hope.
im hoping im just not so horribly addicted that im not even having fun anymore, just working and plowing through AA to be on top.

idk i l play SoD cause i played live for 8 years but in the end i believe that **** completly fucked it up. SoD has a more classic feel. and idk what it is about the game play and the graphics but that old school touch i just cant get away from it. not to mention like others have said just the fact that its such a small server even though it grows daily. it really gives people the oppurtunity to makes friends and just have friend. generally everyone knows or knows of everyone and thats always a nice thing unless u are a few select few. and yah i mean even when u r bored or whatnot it is nice to just sit down in athica and have LFG on and just chill with friends or chat with others.

I keep playing here because Live was my first real MMO, and as such everything has to be compared to it. For better or worse it always comes back to the original. Playing here does indeed seem a lot like an adventure thru an alternate reality, one in which SoE never got a hold of the game and turned it into a money pit full of expansions that you had to buy in order to be usable to anyone's group/raid lol.

Goes back to actually caring about the content that goes into it, and just trying to add "Sword of the pwnage now with more hp" over and over again. Being able to just chill out anywhere in the world and just sit back, listening to /ooc can be entertainment in and of itself. Sometimes I do just that for 30mins or more while I try to figure out what I'm in the mood to do, or which character I want to work on today.

Overall, it's just a friendly atmosphere, with good people, and Dev's GM's that actually play the game as players, so they all really know how things are from the players perspective.

There is certainly a charm about the SoD game experience itself. Primarily I'd say the community itself is what keeps me attached to SoD like or lump it. I believe the strongly encouraged role playing aspects of SoD help make and shape into the better than average experience that it is. Like some of the others have said the fact that it's a bit smaller tight knit community plays another part as well I believe.
