Slow motion?

Hello,
I've been having some problems with my character periodically moving in 'slow motion' while playing on SoD. For about 15 or 20 seconds I move at normal speed, and then I'll move at about half-speed for the next 30 seconds, before the cycle repeats itself. I pressed F11 to bring up the green bar thing and to check my connection information but that all seems normal (at least according to other players). Has anyone had this problem before and/or have a possible solution?

I'm currently using Windows XP on an Emachines laptop with a Mobile AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3200+ and 512mb ram. My internet connection is cable with Comcast through a Netgear router (yes, I took steps to forward the ports but that didn't seem to make a difference.)

I hope someone can help! I've already died to orcs twice because I couldn't run away at full speed :(

Thanks!

This is almost definitely an issue with your video card, as your machine has more than enough power otherwise to push what this game needs, do you play with fullscreen enabled? If not I would try that as a start, by either using alt+enter, or as an option try disabling eqwindows entirely. You can do this in the startup options of the SoD launcher. If this doesn't solve your problem, try disabling specific graphic options, as there may be a specific spell effect that triggers this. Also as an option, send us all your current running processes, that may help us solve this mystery.

Well, I couldn't get it into full screen mode using alt+enter...

But oddly enough my problem seems to have disappeared. Everything's running normally now. Go figure :psyduck:

Anyway, thanks for the help. :keke:

Set your power settings to "Always On" or some analog in vista if that's what you're using. I don't have the time to direct you to it right now, but this is purely a laptop issue with EQ and has to do with the power your cpu is getting.

Well the bad news is the problem's back. The good news is... well... there really isn't any good news.

I tried adjusting the graphics settings without result. I also changed the power settings to "Always On," even setting all of the fields to "Never." Nothing.

Maybe my laptop's just cursed :(

Did you download and run EQPlaynice? It can interfere with your CPU cycles and cause a slowdown on mobile processors.

No, the problem wouldn't be with EQPlaynice, as all that program does is force the game to use only the minimum required CPU cycles instead of pegging it at 100% all the time. I noticed you said you have a laptop, any idea what kind of graphics card it has?

Do this test for me, sit character perfectly still while watching something that moves, and tell me if you still notice lag every 30 seconds. Also, make your character stare at the ground and run around, tell me if you notice any latency, and also, if this latency is happening exactly every x seconds, then I would stop troubleshooting graphics settings and possibly focus more on your running processes in the background.

Is your laptop running Vista? If so that is probably the first problem I would fix.

Alright, I did a little more research, and I've come up with the following constants:

When I first boot the game there appears to be no problems; everything moves at normal speed. However, after a period lasting between 45-180 seconds, it begins what I now refer to as the 'lag cycle.'

In this 'lag cycle,' it will go into slow motion mode for 18-23 seconds, and then return to normal speed for 40-48 seconds, and then repeat.

I tried battling a couple of MOBs to see if they might be the catalyst but couldn't determine one way or the other. I tried sitting in front of one of the campfires just outside of Halas and it still lagged, even with no mobs or passing players.

Before actually logging into the server I tried using the 'explore mode' in the character select screen. Interestingly enough, this didn't lag at all.

And finally, I'm almost certain this is a power-related problem because when I pull the power plug it goes into a constant, never-ending state of slow-motion. When I plug the power back in, the game resumes the 'lag cycle.'

I referred to http://forum.shardsofdalaya.com/index.php?topic=8729.0 for additional help and tried everything suggested there but to no avail.

My video card is the ATI Mobility Radeon 9600/9700 series. For some reason my Task Manager no longer displays tabs so I can't see what processes I'm running... but I think that's a different issue entirely.

In the BIOS I have only one option related to 'power' (I think) and it's called RF Power Setting or something like that, with three options: On, Off, and Restore. I'm not exactly sure if that's the speed control I'm looking for, but I set it to 'Off' and saw no difference in performance.

Actually EQPN does interfere with mobile processors...especially processors with a speedstep type technology. I experienced a similar issue while running EQPN, hence the reason I asked.
