Skyrim > All

Personally I hate it. Worst combat I've ever had the disappointment of experiencing.

I never understood the hype of these Elder Scrolls games. To me they are like single player MMO's, all the boring grind and fedex questing without any of the longevity and interraction/company of other people. With things like grinding, camping gear, and especially tradeskills, they seem at least somewhat worthwhile to me in an MMO because you are building up skills and gear on a character that you can potentially play for years. But in a game like the Elder Scrolls, it's generally all over in a month or two so it just seems especially pointless to me. If the "Main Quest" was huge and involving and required a really powerful character, then it would give the whole thing more purpose, for me at least. But with Oblivion, I finished the entire main quest in about 3 days, so all I was left with was the pseudo-MMO world full of generic quests that themselves are not very fun to do, and the rewards don't seem worthwhile seeing as they are building up a character in a game that I will probably not be playing in a month's time anyway.

The thing that bugs me the most though, is the combat. It's just so crap, I don't get it. :( It's single player... offline.. so they could do anything, and this is what they crap out? With melee characters its just click click click, block, click click click, block. :( Usually I like to play as pure mage types and they are the worst of all. In the hour or two I've played, every 'battle' was won by just holding the mouse button and spraying the enemies with fire and they all drop dead in seconds. There's no buffing, debuffing, healing, lifetaps, etc.. all I do is squirt fire on everything and watch it die instantly. Not only that but mana and health regenerates so fast that it doesn't matter, nothing matters. I tried making a pet class and there are no pet controls at all. No back off, attack this, hold, anything.. they are just do whatever. Talk about dumbed down. Every MMO I have ever played had far better combat, and they achieve that even inspite of latency concerns and the possiblity of there being massive numbers of characters on screen at once etc.. Also the interface on the PC version is a joke. A sick joke, where they give you a mouse cursor but you can't actually click on anything.

I thought Dragon Age Origins was a dumbed down version of Baldur's Gate, but I even far preferred that to Skyrim. At least in that game you have a hotbar full of stuff and you have a whole party too which spices things up nicely. Gimme something like that, but in Skyrim's big open world, and then we are getting a lot closer to a best RPG evah.

Your critique sucks.

Don't get me wrong, I agree- Bethesda should work on their combat, and I personally was not a huge fan of Oblivion when they tried catering more to the casual gamer. But did you notice that your entire post was about the combat in TES games? On a connected thought, words cannot express the dismay I felt when you said "single player mmo." TES games are role playing games...you know, the kind of game that preceded the massively multiplayer online role playing game?

TL;DR you are playing TES games for the wrong reasons go play CoD

Or better yet go play Demon's Souls or Dark Souls, there's some sword and board combat that is a real challenge.

That said, I don't think Skyrim is a better game than Morrowind, although it is an improvement over Oblivion. Demon's Souls/Dark Souls are recent games for the PS3 that are equal to or better than Skyrim, easily. Skyrim, like any of the last few Bethesda games, still has lots of bugs and quirks that break immersion.

Your critique of my critique sucks, douche, and fuck you with your go play CoD comment. I think the fact that one of my favourite games is Baldur's Gate and that I'm a SoD player should exempt me from lame comments like that.

The majority of what you do in an RPG is kill stuff, so the fact that the combat sucks is significant enough to ruin the whole experience. If you disagree then that's just your own dumbass opinion. And no the Elder Scrolls games are not roleplaying games to me, they are action games posing as an RPG. It's people like you who are enablers for their slacking. Meanwhile newcomers like The Witcher and Two Worlds (and Demon's Souls) games are showing up and improving on pretty much everything because the Elder Scrolls has been resting on it's laurals and continually failing to improve.

Yea well, I can't help but be fond of SoD, for reasons like it being one of the only MMO's available these days in which you can actually die.

I killed a dragon when I was level 2, on master difficulty. That kind of took any sense of epic out of the game for me. I quit playing it shortly after that. Good thing Arkham City is out today.

That was my experience with both Morrowind and Oblivion too, and Fallout 3 for that matter. BTW if any of you have Oblivion there is a total conversion mod called Nehrim which is really good. (Better than the original game imo).

I haven't beaten it but I am pretty far into it with regards to sidequests/the mainquest, However my major gripe with this game is pretty simple. I have to fucking WORK to make the game challenging, I have had the combat on the highest difficulty and even when imposing significant limitations on my character the game is a fucking joke.

I agree its significantly better than oblivion but morrowind/daggerfall are still much better than it. Also I don't particularly care for voice acting on "ALL OF THE NPCS" when there is a total of 12 voice actors.

That said I do have fun with it.

I have to fucking WORK to make the game challenging,

yeah it would be nice if they did various things like limit potion/food intake at higher difficulty levels, maybe reduce the number of perks you can get in order to force a more specialized character at higher difficulty, improved AI combat pathing...

You are supposed to remove your hands and play only with your nose and tongue.

Something else that really bothered me was the lack of polish with certain things. If you happened to do the dark brotherhood quest line and know who the final assassination is/was and how grand/important it is supposed to be and yet after its over with you get a pat on the back and nothing actually happens on account of it except some guard might whisper to you about it in solitude or something. Minor things like this really made me frowntown.

It is like Bethesda has the macro down but not the micro

whats bothering me most right now is the massive bug with the Conspiracy quest in Markath that doesn't make you non-kos after you finish the quest basically making the town off limits to me, i can't bribe the guard out of it and asking to go to jail puts me in a loop of him "re-aggroing" me. I've managed to turn a few quests in but its such a pain to dismiss my follower, disable the ai, find the quest person, enable the ai and hope i can finish/start it, and then disable the ai again before i get swarmed with guards and die.

The other thing that kinda bothers me is that guards bitch at you for shouting in all the towns, you'd think in Solitude at least they'd be super pissed because of what happened with shouts there and others would just be to impressed to tell you to cut it out.

I don't like that I'm threatened with jail time when I drop weapons near towns. I don't want this iron two handed greatsword that I misclicked and you keep giving it to me fuck. I don't even know if they eventually jail you I got guilt tripped by the tone of "thats dangerous" and "Don't let me ever catch you doing this again".
