simple channeling change

right now, 1 channeling is 1 spell crit, so any item near to on-tier with 1 crit is basically irreplaceable except by another item with channeling. oleghar's ingenuity and focus of the possessor are two examples

if you changed it so 5 channeling equaled 1 crit (0.2 per) and 5% at 25 was the cap, it would allow you to spread it more liberally and give upgrades in .2 increments instead of the massive jump it is now

We would if we could. Would have to rewrite a ton of stuff to let us change it to a non whole number.
 
We could make it count for, lets say .5, but then you would need 2 for it to do anything.
 
you could change it from crit to be just linear power gain like codices, on spells only obviously... as it is now, it being crit really only benefits wizards more than other classes, as they gain more from it than any other class, and they already are the highest dps in the game by a considerable margin.

We really have been trying to find a good replacement for it that is in line with the theme of item effects. Raw damage is one option that came up but it just feels clunky and all encompassing versus the other effects. Granted, its better then the 1 crit, but there has to be something else needed then mini cop.

edit: wait I missed you saying "on spells only". higher nukes seems like evocation if memory serves.
 
evocation affects nukes only, channeling would work on heals, dots, etc. i agree though it's probably not a great idea. the other idea off the top of my head is spell haste, 1% per channeling
 
I do not mean to keep striking down your ideas, and I really am thinking them through, but cast time is constrained heavily by the client. Jumbers could say more, but I am pretty sure we can not reduce them more than casting speed 9 client side.
 
spell haste definitely works up to 50% with buffs, maybe that doesn't apply to worn items?
 
I can look into the restrictions. I know at some point the client cast bar stops reflecting cast time.
 
with buff spell haste, the cast bar doesn't accurately affect it, but the spell ends midway thru the cast bar. i think it does cause some issues with the fizzle time at high cast speeds, but the spell itself lands faster.
 
oh yeah I am sorry I was not clear. We can make all spells instant, the client just stops showing it at some point. I'd rather stay away from further unsynchronizing the two, if at all possible.
