Shadowknight Solo/Race Questions

Deckk

Dalayan Beginner
I read a SK solo guide, and I think I'd have a ton of fun playing one. Now, I know the popular opinion is to two-box on this server. And I get it. Soloing isn't anywhere near as efficient, so it makes sense to suggest it. But I'm not planning on playing a two-box, and I'm not all about efficiency (I played EQ, efficiency was never the name of that game!)

I'm more looking for some kind of advice as it pertains to race for the SK. So I have some questions:

1. Can Iksar wear plate in SoD? Do they look decent in SoD plate?

2. Are there a ton of gnome shadowknights running around? I realize stats wise they aren't great (aside from intelligence, which is kind of a tertiary stat), but I've always been partial to gnomes.

3. What should I know about class penalties/bonus?

4. How long should I realistically expect to get to level 9 solo?

5. What about starting area hunting? Any place in particular that's a great starting point? (Even if I have to find a way to get there?)

And last... 6. Speaking of finding a way to get there, what are my options to get to a different starting area (of course, keeping in mind that evil SK means I can't go anywhere I please)

Thanks all!

There is no, or at least very little, race restrictions as far as gear goes. This will not effect you in any way.

2. Are there a ton of gnome shadowknights running around? I realize stats wise they aren't great (aside from intelligence, which is kind of a tertiary stat), but I've always been partial to gnomes.

Not a ton, but there is a few. The current #2 SK is a gnome. #1 is a human if you are curious.

3. What should I know about class penalties/bonus?

IMO, there is no clear "best" race for a SK. You should pick what you think looks cool. I personally thing Iksars look awesome.

4. How long should I realistically expect to get to level 9 solo?

Soloing at low levels can be very hard. Some of the lowest levels are the hardest parts of the game. Feel free to look me up in game and I will hook you up with a Mithril two hander. It will make soloing much more easy and speed it up a very noticeable amount.

5. What about starting area hunting? Any place in particular that's a great starting point? (Even if I have to find a way to get there?)

I usually level characters in Newport starting area even with the negative zone exp bonus. I then get into BB and have some fun. There is also a nice dungeon (The Cesspits) close by that you should check out.

And last... 6. Speaking of finding a way to get there, what are my options to get to a different starting area (of course, keeping in mind that evil SK means I can't go anywhere I please)

Evil classes really are not a thing in SoD. You will be free to go to almost any city. Just keep away from cleric and Pally areas.

Kedrin nailed most of this, though I want to add a few details.

Starting stats aren't very important. Gear will cap your stats, even low ones. What does matter, though again not very much, are the racial abilities. The wiki has details and Gnomes have good ones. Personally I would avoid any xp penalty races (iksar/troll) because 10% of whatever 65 levels, 500 AAs, and dozens of tomes worth of xp amounts to is an obscene number, but to each their own. Ultimately the aesthetics of your characters probably matters most.

Newport, yes! There are a number of collect quests (beetles, rats, ratmen) for your mummy right outside the SK/Nec guild in the sewers. This is an awesome starting area which features every vendor you need, a bank, and a VERY early gate clickie quest for Nec/Evil Cleric/SKs. It has been a while but I think you can xp up to around lvl 6 killing stuff then doing all the handins gets you to ~8. Then cesspit is right there or Blackburrow is just outside the city! Lvl 9 is doable in a few hours solo and easy if you get a mithril two hander.

You should make a troll because by the numbers, there are many fewer trolls than any other race. They are also green, fat, itchy, have cool faces, the best velious helmet and don't fit through doors.

If you decide to roll a troll, it is your duty to DISABLE luclin models for at least trolls. Trolls with luclin models are not real trolls at all and should be burned alive.

And they are fat enough to constant clog up the works I'm dungeons! I feel like an elephant when boxing fuwok, but it certainly is amusing.

Look up one of my guys up in game and I'll toss you some platinum to get started.

I think ogres are the best race for SK and warrior and shaman and beastlord cause of their racials less stamina drain/starting with more stam/less canni dmg are all pretty good.

You will not regret going to the cesspits under Newport, easily one of the best dungeons in the game.

How do I reach you guys in game? Like what character names? Not even for handouts, just to chat about the game would be fun!

Haven't decided on his name yet, or race (how do dark elves look in full plate? Been a long time! Haha) I'll post when I come up with something!

/who all [name]
/tell [name]

Most of us have our character names in our signature, but I can't check other dudes since I'm posting from my phone.

Post your name in this thread too. (There is actually an in game mail function too, called listsend. You can wiki how to use it.)

Kreetin will be his name. Not going to play now but I created him. How do I turn off the awful Luclin models? Holy cow.

You can see how any race/gender/armor combination looks by going to Athica B (Southern Felwithe) on any character. Go to the outside of the Enchanter guild and look for Arcane Enchanter Shaor (a.k.a. the ENC NPC buffbot). He is capable of taking on any race, gender, or texture combination you like.

If you tell him to "become a 6 0 3 3," he will become a Dark Elf (that's the 6) male (the 0) with platemail armor (the first 3) and a platemail helmet on (the second 3). If you simply say the word "shapeshifter" to him, you can also get the run-down on what the number fields mean. See this thread for more information. Also, if you prefer a visual gallery of all races by ID# to use with this NPC, see here.

This is done in the options menu right after you load everquest (before logging a character in.)

Personally, I like some luclin graphics. Barbarians look less like pirates and more like barbarians :p

Is this where it says if you uncheck it it'll load a lower render?

In terms of race, the bonuses are minimal. Pick something you think looks cool. Also, I prefer medium races. I have played both large and small races to a couple hundred aa's and having to shrink or illusion to get through a door or up a stair for the thousandth time eventually overwhelmed any concern over racial bonuses for me.
