Server comming down

I would greatly appreciate it if you guys would really give us 5 mins when you say we have 5 mins for the server comming down. I was in the middle of killing a named when you brought the server down and now will end up being dead when i log back in. We got a 10 min warning, then a 5 min warning, then the server went down withing 45 seconds of the 5 min warning.

Thanks

While i understand ur frustration and i do think they should actually give 5 mins when they say 5mins...

The 5 min warning actually means: log out! It doesnt mean: start engaging a mob while u know ur short on time!

Altho it is definitely an inconvenience, it's not something we do intentionally. One thing to keep in mind is there are several people involved in a patch, and at least one of them has a million things going on at once. Sometimes things don't go exactly as planned.

That's fine, you can put it in the trash can.

I understand that things go wrong sometimes. If the broadcast had said server comming down now, logout, i wouldn't have engaged.

You really shouldn't be trying to kill "just one more thing..." before the server goes down.

The named will still be up when the server comes back up - you don't gain anything by killing it before the reboot.

Wait... will it?

I always thought all current spawns poofed and there was a random server-side re-roll for what that spawn gets repopulated with. Might be the same mob, might be a different one. Does it save the current state of spawns and reinitialize them all when it reboots?

If that's the case, if I fought my way into a zone and the server goes down, will all the empty spawns between me and the exit then be filled up when the server comes back online, or will they still take time to pop again?

Whatever the case, I do sympathize with the idea of trying to kill the named before the server goes down if you see it. It's not like you can log in again in 5 minutes. It could be a long time before the server even comes up again, and in that time you may or may not IRL be able to hang around for that to happen. If you come back the next day and someone else has come by in that time and popped the pop, you're out of luck. Get it while the getting's good, imo.

Oh: and here's a theoretical solution. Is there a command to boot someone off the server who is currently online? If so, could you make a macro so when you run it: A message is server-wide broadcast about things coming down in 5 minutes AND a timer is set up for 5 minutes AND when the timer runs out the macro auto-boots everyone off the server? (and maybe even the macro can then lock the server too if needed?) Then it wouldn't be someone busy who has to do it - someone just has to run one macro, and everyone can give it 5, 10, 30 minutes or however long they need to actually take it down on their own time at their own pace, and all the players all get booted off exactly when they expect it.

Just a random suggestion that might be helpful.

It just does not make any sense to me to engage a named when the server is coming down in five minutes...you are playing with fire...and well, sometimes you will get burnt. They just don't bring the server down for shits and giggles.

Only very rarely does the server go down for more than a few minutes. I can't recall a patch that oddly went wrong somehow and took longer than 30 minutes to bring the server back.

You are lucky you get an ETA for downtimes at all. Any time an ETA is given and is broken in any minor fashion, shit like this crops up with people complaining. That is mainly why there are never any ETAs on anything else BESIDES bringing the server down.

I am trying to provide ideas for solutions to a point of annoyance for many people on an issue that affects everyone. Not complain, not do anything else. If you can not understand my sympathy for someone else's position, I don't see how that has any bearing on the point that was brought up, any of the questions I asked, or how it is related to my proposed solution... all things I would like to see commented on please = )

Agree.. I will risk my life to try to take the named, if I don't do him now, someone might do it faster then I can get back on and losed the pop.

I think the marco idea is great.. In fact, this can be implemented on the server side.. so it will be a command to lock server, broadcast, change MOTD, wait, reboardcast, kick all...

Hey, I don't think anyone is saying staff doesn't have the right. We're just saying it would be super cool if some stuff changed and it would make some things a little better. This thread should probably be moved to Suggestions, cause that's really what it is... just some suggestions from some people who see something they think might be able to be made better, so they suggest = ) I think everyone realizes suggestions won't necessarily ever happen, but we have a whole section of the online message boards for them (which, admittedly is not this section, but maybe it can be moved), so hopefully we can keep making them and everyone wins = )

The warnings are for your sake, so threads like this don't happen. Be glad that there are warnings at all. The times are more of a rough estimate and it is nice of the gm/admin/wiz to provide this to people. Basiclly if you see any warning that the serer is going to come down its a good idea to find a safe spot asap.

I don't think the heavy-handed "Haha sucks for you!" responses in this thread are justified. Eredhel basically hit the nail on the head: A lot of people are involved in a patch or reboot. The person tinkering with the server is almost never the person giving the warning, and the former is almost always very busy with the server itself. It's not that the server needs to go down that fast; rather, it's usually a simple miscomunnication. For example, server person says "tell them server reboot in 5", then someone logs in and announces, but by that time a few minutes have past; they say "announced it" in the channel, but the server-worker doesn't notice, and when the five minutes since his original request are up, he reboots. No malice, just an unhappy coincidence.

If you try to engage a named during a five-minute warning, you're taking a risk. Most of the time the risk is worth it because usually the warning is accurate, but sometimes you get burned. For obvious reasons, we can't reimburse stuff like this, so chin up and better luck next time.

We volunteer to make this server available and fun to all.

We need to bring it down for reasons we won't always explain.

We want it back up asap, since we're usually given more work if it's down (i.e. to bring it back up).

You can do anything you want right up until you get disconnected. We expect to see *zero* threads about what went wrong post-warning, and zero petitions.

We honestly do work hard to serve you. Freely. Enjoy the gift.
