Ranger v. Rogue

How comparable is the Ranja vs. Rogue dps in general? Anyone have parses I can look at?

At the highest tiers, rogues win against dragons and on fights with minimal movement afaik. Rangers win other fights and match or surpass optimal Rog dps if they have an ench booning them (which should be pretty much every fight). Overall they're within like 100 dps of each other across raids/6mans I think.

they have pretty similar DPS, what one comes out on top is typically 50/50, but rangers get the added benefit of being ranged and DPSing while moving, while also having a mix of spell and melee damage

Yeah even though rogues come out ahead on some fights, the difference is minimal even in the best of cases. There's really no fights where I think "boy I sure wish we had a rogue" whereas there's plenty of high tier fights that a ranger will comfortably outparse a rogue while providing some pad heals or other benefits.

Yeah, was watching a ranger solo in MielC earlier, and got sad.
Then trying to find Brother Kromtrash in Dreadlands, without track, and got sad.

Of course I also was wandering through ice giants in EC all sneaky like earlier too.

At least through the mid tiers, rangers are just stupidly good. For any fight where you're not just sitting there attacking rangers are very good.

For an example, think about doing Redsun/Farhanniah (or any other fight where mobility is important) specifically as a ranger vs a rogue.
Rogue: Attack a farhag fire spirit, SPLAT.
Ranger: Attack a farhag fire spit and kite it around while doing damage and it's not even in range of hitting you.... And if it does hit you, you have a stance that pretty much makes you invulnerable to melee attacks for a little bit. But not the kind of invulnerable where you lose aggro, you actually get to keep it so everyone else can kill it and it doesn't splat someone else.

But as a ranger, you do have to do deal with arrows and that's pretty annoying! I think that's the balance?

That and you better dont parse us on raid mobs,vs. high ac mobs bow dps is pretty sad.
Where Rangers really shine is on trash xp mobs, not that it matters or does the guild any good.
As a box they are great, much less re-positioning needed than a melee class when shooting arrows, and they can tank to some degree if needed.
All in all I think they are balanced,I enjoy playing my Ranger(mostly ignoring bane arrows to keep my sanity).

As a Rogue myself, I was always jealous of our rangers.

They never got on rampage when a secondary tank died, they never ate whirlwinds or accidentally took an enrage to the face. They could even sometimes be out of AoE ranges. This is everything up to about tier 10, I don't know what tier 11+ was really like in this comparison. If a target was moving it was no problem for them while my backstab button became worthless.

They can solo / duo box way more efficiently with any class than a Rogue can, too.

However -

Through the mid tiers, life sucks for them. Bow upgrades are pretty rare, they constantly have to make arrows and have to have inventory management that borders on OCD levels.

I think the payoff in the end is more consistent, safer DPS, but fuck the journey to get there - I'd roll a rogue every time.

I don't see why ranger dps against high AC mobs would suffer in comparison to rogues? If anything I'd think rangers would handle it better since a large portion of their dps is from spells/procs. I suppose it depends on the effect AC has on backstab though.

If you don't use bane arrows you are voluntarily gimping your dps. I agree they are a hassle but if you are doing anything that isn't completely trivial I don't know why you wouldn't grab the appropriate arrows.

yeah if anything high AC mobs dunk rogues the hardest because roughly 90% of their DPS is melee compared to rangers who have a way higher split. Rangers get the benefit of dealing physical ranged DPS while moving and they get almost 100% boss uptime while also dealing a pretty solid amount of spell damage, having high sustained and burst DPS, and being able to avoid whirlwinds etc. Rogues are also a pretty sick DPS class but its just that most higher tier fight mechanics favor ranged DPS and they also have the positional requirement of being behind the mob.

Really though whatever dude has the better character and better button pushing skills is going to perform better in a majority of situations for a majority of the game, and I would argue that rangers have a slight advantage over rogues assuming both classes are played optimally under optimal conditions.
