Ranger Auto-Attack

I dont really to to what extent this has been discussed before, but with the recent debate over bards, their having to repetitively mash buttons, and having melees auto-attack taken away (isnt being considered, I know, but just to prove how annoying it would be), I'd like to bring up the topic of range-auto attack.

While melee's would complain endlessly if they had to click their attack button EVERY TIME it came up, I dont see how clicking range attack all the time is any different. It requires absolutely no skill (timing isnt an issue as most of the time I just mash it over and over well under delay time so it hits right as it pops) to push a single button over and over. Even then, bow kiting is pretty annoying (I bind my range attack to my numpad-0 key so I can do movement and attack with my pinkie with the same hand) and hurts after a while, not to mention not being able to type efficiently in full sentences without missing a couple bow shots (which is a few thousand damage w/ AA's and the such). Anyways, with that said I would much appreciate seeing either:

- Ranged Autofire implemented in game as melee auto-attack works
- An official word letting us use a 3rd party program for it (I've researched this subject before and there is one - wont post the link unless its a go - from a well known Rangers website which works by pretty much by spamming whatever button you choose).

Feel free to post comments/criticism/whatever.

Thanks for your time :)

i have a 60 ranger, and yes it is lame having to spam the button all day.

as long as it cant be manipulated in a ill way (havent thought it out much, just woke up) sounds like a nice thing to me

OH GOD NO TOO OVERPOWERING PLAYERS LIKE YOU TRASH THE GAME

Are you serious? For the love of all that is good, how in the blazes can you possibly think ranged auto-attack would be overpowering? Good god man, get a grip.

Your sarcasm detector is kinda broken, huh?

Yeah I would love to see auto-range attack go in. I started a ranger recently, even though he's only 21, it's already kind of annoying pressing the range attack over and over again. I know I'm not 65 yet, but I can already tell what it's going to be like getting there and beyond.

Any opinions from staff? I've seen nothing but support (Rabb doesnt count :p ) and it doesnt seem like an outlandish proposal.

I'm not sure how feasible it is, actually. I think it would require editing the client.

What about the third party program for Dev review?

Can we make CH more liek a console game? I think it would be cool if for 10 seconds you have to mash the button as fast as you can and if it doesn't go fast enough then you have to start over again.

And yeah, no auto range attack either.

And no symphony for bards.

I think monks should have to hit different keys for every appendage that strikes during melee as well. Fair is fair after all.

Gnomes need to double all those requirements for anything they do (being so small of course has it's disadvantages).

Warriors should also have to type out taunts to successfully taunt. No more auto taunt. And nothing short like "your mom." would be acceptible either. It must contain several curses and racial slurs for optimal effect.

I'm sure everyone agrees that these are fine fine ideas. I'll work on the other classes later.

Actually, it would be kind of cool if monks could string together "combos" of like Kick, Kick, Tiger Punch, Hadoken...

And making CH into a "Test your might!" would ROCK for serious.

Haha...I could see all the CHers buying new keyboards left and right or writing macros to get around that. hehe

Fear not...I shall come up with other bad ideas though!

As stupid as the idea was, it would sure prevent clerics from being botted...

It would prevent a lot of things. :)

Okay I'm all done with bad ideas. Back to camping this stupid blackstone of dusk. :(

Well, the program that I've heard of the most (on live, and such) has been 'Autofire V 0.4'

Essentially, this is a tiny program that runs in the background and has the following interface:

Input: This is the button that you press to turn autofire on/off
Output: This is the button you want spammed (range attack)
Update Delta (milliseconds): This is the frequency of spammage in milliseconds, ex: 200 would be the equivalent of it hitting the 'output' key every 0.2 seconds, or 5 times a second.
Set/Toggle: Lets you choose between holding down the 'input' button or just pressing it once for on/off for autofire.

So for example, lets say most people's range attack (for those who use it) is in their #2 hotbank key, so if they chose to, they could press their 2 key over and over when range attacking. With this program, you could set Input to say... caps lock, and output to '2', and update delta to 200 and on 'toggle' mode. Then instead of pressing 2 over and over, you press caps lock once at the beginning of the fight and it presses your '2' button every 0.2 seconds, then when the fight is over, you press caps lock again and it stops. The problem with this is that if you're chatting, you'll write stuff like: 'h2222e2222y22222222 222g222u22y222s222!222', so it would be wise to make an alternate key of range attack to non chat-effected button, such as numpad-0.

So yeah, thats basically it, no actual 'work' is required on the client or the server, and basically no one would even realize you're using it, because to the computer and all its programs its the same as your keyboard registering 2222222222222222222 all the time.

I think I used that once on live trying to cap my sense heading... I wasn't smart enough to turn it off while typing.

no way

Having played a ranger to 59 on live, I loved the autofire macro, but it has distinct disadvantages, chiefly, it was so easy to abuse once I got used to it. Needed some cash? Camp out in PoG and autoforage branches of planar oak. Need to get up my alteration? Find a quiet spot and chain cast until I am maxxed out.

Those are two very easy ways to abuse the system, and thus I would highly reccommend not allowing the use of autofire macros.

That said, it is still easy to in game macro skills up . .like putting sense heading on the same key as your left turn button, and the like. But at least you have to be at your computer for that.

I truly feel the pain of all rangers who don't have auto-attack. But on the other hand, I don't beleive it is as debilitating as you all make it sound (same with bards and symphony. . . I actually enjoy manually twisting my songs on WR). I think it makes the character more fun to play, because it is so much more involved and challenging.
