Question about the Sharp Little Claw

First off, Id like to just say hello to all on these boards. I am new to SoD and am loving every minute of it.

On to the question...

One of my characters (halfling warrior) had the good luck and fortune to aquire the Sharp Little Claw (1dmg / 4del) off the adept mob Rabb the Rat. The speed and ratio of this weapon makes it seem very attractive for the first 10-15 levels or so. (I am trying to play these characters without buying any equipment and looting everything I wear...I fully understand I should just buy mastercrafteed weaps or whatever)

Anyway, my warrior is now level 10 and still cannot hit for more than 1 dmg with this weapon. I find this odd because I can hit for 14/15 with a 7 dmg weap, 12 with a 6 dmg weap, and 10 with a 5 dmg weap.

I am trying to figure out the dmg calculator to determine why I cant hit for 2 with the claw. If someone knows the formula or can shed some light on this subject please let me know.

Thanks much

Not really sure, maybe you are hitting for more then 1 damage, but the mobs ac is asboring the rest of it?

I don't think the claw recieves a damage bonus, so it will always hit for 1.

Is that by design, or just because of the way the calculator works?

I'd suggest using something else. 1/4 while good for taunt, is pretty useless for anything else.

If this weapon received a damage bonus, and did two instead of four, compare that to a 7 / 28 weapon. 14 / 28... Hmm, nope, I guess 2 / 4 would be in line with 14 / 28, give or take, but it's the taunt factor that matters most I would assume.

Yeah, I definatly wanted it for the taunt, but with dmg the way it is currently, the Sharp Little Claw is easily outdamaged by the newbie weaps that drop off decaying skellies an gnolls in centaur hills.

I just assumed that the adept weaps were supposed to be a little better than this.

THE CLAW!!!!!

I hit for more then 1 damage with it.... on both my bard and monk

At what level and what is your strength? Could STR have something to do with it?

wanelo iaeolan and immerzian

i hit for 2s and i think 3s a few times.... oddly i think i got a critical hit on iaeolan for a 3... without any sort of critical AA... ask soudrazah, he can vouch for me =P

That sounds like a problem in the damage calc. I'll point Wiz to this thread.

Wow, that is refreshing.

Thanks for looking into it!

I hope you can adjust to having staff that actually listen to you. It is a big change from the "old ways" that many of us cut our teeth on.

Now, admittedly, I did not wanelo either of those characters, but what you're probably describing is called mob AC -- and it's not as odd as you think(!)

Want "odd"? Getting a 17 weapon-dmg rogue backstab mitigated to a point where it does 1 (one) point of actual damage.

I didn't think damage bonuses came in until later levels, and that any weapon has a chance to do 0 to 2x its damage rating on a given hit. With a certain amount of STR, the full 2x dmg could be achieved. The more STR, the more regular those full hits would land.

I was thinking it might be a math issue in that unless it figured the full 2x damage figure, it was dropping the fraction and just doing 1. /shrug
