i'm posting this here... your not the only person that has a problem.
Hi there - as announced in the thread I am replying in PM:
There are various reasons why I refuse to install the .net-framework:
a) I don't see any reason to install a 23MB package (over 100MB once installed) that is likely to change a LOT of things in my system just in order to run a patcher that in itself is an application of no more than 100kbyte
b) Microsoft has yet to release a single major product that is bug & exploit-free from the start - before that happens I won't install any new M$ products
c) M$ has made an issue out of making using their products a general pain in the ass. And since Office XP, they require online product activation (where your PC transmits some (you-don't-know-what-else) data directly to M$, and since .net is the successor of XP, I expect they made it even worse there (M$ has been involved in a bunch of spyware affairs with their software)
All in all, I don't want to apply any system patches that are not at all necessary to fix existing bugs because they just make the system run more and more unstable - I have repaired enough broken windows installations at friends' to know just _how_ messed up they become when a user installs everything that is suggested to him.

yes.. "M$" aka Microsoft really is out to get you...
just FYI... most of the time installing .NET will help the performance of your machine.. some programs have built in .NET calls that will run more effiecent if .NET is actualy installed on said machine.
EVERY piece of code ever written has holes in it people can exploit. MS just has more people that use it / hate it, thus it gets more attackers. To be honest, the biggest problem with Windows is IE... Stop useing it, and you wont' get all that spyware, adware, etc (usually from surfing porn)
The first time I installed .NET on my machine was in 2002. I have never noticed it cause a machine to run slower, or mess up any program i use with my MS machines. I personally have 4 machines, 3 of them have mandrake on them as a main OS (running windows in a window) and never have a problem. I also dont' run any antivirus, or software firewalls. I haven't had to rebuild a machine because of a hack, exploit, etc ever. I run a d-link router, and have manual set up the allowed ports.
soo...
a.) You wont' install a 100 meg program, to run a 3gig program? makes sense. (if you have installed from classic EQ disk, you have more time involved installed the game, than you would just downloading, and installing .NET)
b.) show me a program that is released with absolutly no bugs.. wont' happen.
c.) They tell you exactly what you are sending them, if you read the policy, they have to. If you have a legit copy of XP there is no hastle.. They are a company, they rely on people buying their products.. not just downloading them... I personally have used the same copy of windows 2000 pro on many machines.. but now any time I need to install XP, i buy a copy.. /shrug
All in all, ME was the only OS that ms put out that was unstable from install. If you have trouble with your OS becomeing unstable, it is the USERS fault (that means YOU) learn to curve your surfing habits, and download a few programs like Spybot, and AdAware, to removed the 'junk' that gets installed from useing IE... OR, install firefox, and get less than 10% of the adware, / spyware you would with IE.
btw, useing "M$" instead of ms, or micrsoft, just tells me that your to cheap to buy a product you love to bitch about.
Do I hate microsoft? not really, they are a company.. If someone that wants me to build them a machine wants XP on it, they get it.. at an aditional cost.. i'll put 2k, or mandrake on any machine for nothing...
