Portal Effects - Possible Fix...

Howdy.

I've never been able to see the portal effects in SoD. I've heard wonderful descriptions of it ("shitstorm")--a wild, explosive whirwind of effects--but I've never seen it. Which can be rather frustrating, having accidentally walked into it a number of times because I couldn't see it (except at the very last second, seeing the hovering name "Portal", just as I'm being zoning in...). I've scoured these forums for any piece of information which would possibly fix the issue, have received feedback from staff in /gu and /ooc regarding the issue, and fiddled about with every setting ever suggested, but to no avail.

Anywho, much to my shock and bewildered surprise, I finally saw the portal graphic for the first time tonight! Utterly baffled, I tried my other accounts (I have it set up so each account uses a seperate client), and no portal graphic. MG-Foon was kind enough to offer some helpful advice in DB guild chat, suggesting that I make a backup of my eqclient.ini files and replacing the current ones in the other directories with the eqclient.ini file of the client I could see the portal graphic. I did that and *zomgsh!* I now have portal graphics on all my clients (and the accompanying sound, too)!! :dance:

So, the next thing I did was to poke at eqclient.ini files that I backed-up, and see what the differences were. While checking through the files, I recalled that a few days ago I enabled the NPC Spells setting in the Filter section of Options (in the client that was now showing portal graphics) because I noticed (much to my surprise) it was showing as disabled. So then I tested disabling and enabling the NPCSPELLS setting (and relogging the client after each time I changed the setting--also tested changing the setting directly in the ini file and then starting up the client), and that's what appeared to consistently trigger the ability to see the portal effects.

Thinking back on it, it seems bloody obvious--if my assumptions are correct that the Portal is in fact an NPC--that having that setting turned off would disable those effects!! :p

SO... a long story short:

In your EQCLIENT.INI file, change the NPCSpells setting to:

NPCSpells=0

I hope this helps someone, cuz I know just how frustrating it is to not be able to see the portal effects! Best of luck! :)
