Population Growth & the Future

A little background first... my experience with EQEmulator servers are moderate as I played as Geometry on Guild Wars and DoH(...) and somehow joined WR two days ago right when supposedly this big explosion of people started.

Now I donated on GW (which was a mistake since the server was brought down 2 weeks later and I am sure everyone knows the story)... and I also plan on donating for WR in the future after I get some experience under my belt.

What I am getting to is I figure this server growth is only going to expand at an exponential rate. If the server grows at this rate and donators *hopefully* grow at an even rate are there plans to optimize the server connection and box (which I heard just happened)? Server lag has always been an issue on emulator servers but I just wanted to know if there are any optimizations the server admins are planning on making for FUTURE potential of the server.

... or possibly cap the server to 400 people at any given time but allow donators to join at any moment. However, the non-donators would have to wait until the server population drops below 400 people to join? Just a thought... ( sueable? )

Login queues? That causes a lot of hate and discontent throughout the masses.. What if 400 donators are logged on? Defeats the purpose of keep WR free... But I imagine as sthe population grows, so will the infrastructure. I think people will realize that donating is the only way to keep the server going. I'd rather not go back to running my own EQEmu server for personal friends.. a huge world for only 5-10 people.. heh.

Geometry you suck!

Harney here ;)

you're missin out man.. wr owns.. shoot me an in game tell some time so i know who to train

queueing would suck... but if people didnt donate to keep the server up i think it'd be a better alternative than to bring the server down...

i am sure i will see plenty of trains now since i let people know who i am ;p

Geram 42 Magician
Nuven 11 Druid

bring on the train! ;0 (but dont)

Nah, actually, it's people like me that get trained. I'm generally polite and curteous, but all o fmy deaths, save 2, have been the result of trains. <3

Nah, ideas are always welcome, but queues honestly sort of seem to defeat the purpose of WR. The attraction that brings new players is that WR is free, and it's ridded a lot of the negative elements of EQ Live.

Donators should donate because they want to support the effort, not for preferrential treatment or being -able- to play.

Just IMO though. :p

Do you donate? Just curious...

If I donate it's because I want the server to stay up so I can play on it. I don't know many donators who would say "Yeah I love WR even though I can't play...I'll still donate though."

I started playing on WR and about a week later became a donator. If I hadn't been able to log in because there were too many people playing for free I'm not so sure I would have kept donating.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that with the attaining of the 2nd server. We're gonna be okay for a while. The post said that at 250 players, it was running at 10% capacity. We're likely all set till well upwards of a thousand active players now, if the numbers hold true (which I know, with a dynamic environment like WR, they may not). Load balancing is a beautiful thing.

As long as donations are consistent enough to support the second box, we're probably gonna be okay for quite a while, even with the recent population explosion.

I agree with the thought that donators shouldn't donate solely to get benefits such as being able to log in, or whatever. I mean, the WR Staff truly appreciate any and all donations, but I personally feel that if you're motivations are to just receive gratuities as a result, it's not much of a donation :p

We need the donations to keep ourselves afloat, admittedly, and it's also not fair that Wiz codes for hours on end and pays for the server out of his pocket, but we can't give major benefits (such as being able to even play) as it's simply not fair to everyone.

Edit: Oh, and with the new server we're a-okay for a good long while. We got to 350 odd with the old server, and this new one, which is working along side of the old one, is a major upgrade on it.

And Bandwidth has never ever ever been an issue. So we're good for a nice while.

Actually, yes, I'm a platinum donator.. though just this month. I've been playing less than a week myself. I didn't do it for cool clicky toys, even though I do love the Golden Wolf Scale effect *yay for a level 12 warrior running berserk through zones*.

I expect us to be able to play lag-free to 750 players without any immediate changes, and 800 if Wiz goes a-optimizin' one last time (though by then we'd be nearing a very good codebase, so I don't know how many more optimizations would be possible).

But like when we hit 350, more players fortunately also means more donators, and I fully expect us to be able to purchase yet another server when or if that time comes. :)

I've noticed since the addition of the second box that the stand-still lag that used to be experienced on raids has come to a stop. Another problem seems to have popped up now which is the mass packetloss experienced by every player on the raid. It typically ranges from 20-80% continuously with no drops to 0%. Is this something that has been brought to light?

Example: 18 people in West Plaguelands. (zone specific perhaps?)

My problem has always been packet loss, as opposed to lag. I don't think it's changed... we were in DN and it was the same as usual, and perchance worse in Akheva. But, to be honest, I really wouldn't know... I've been playing with the packet loss for a month and a half now, and after that time, you just get used to it.

You slackers should get working on referring people so we can hit 750, too!

Already on it, working on a few Former Marine buddies in NC.

Any of them happen to be recruiters? I hear some of them go way beyond their call to recruit new people, maybe we could use their experience! :D

Haha.. no.. however, I think we've all been on Recruiters Assistance duty so far... so we can help with that.. we're PR whores. <3 Or is that WRPR whores?

in EQLive for a few months I was dealing with killer packet loss but i just made a hotkey of /who all friend or /who all guild or whatever and then whenever i began to get packet loss i would just hit that and it would immediately go away... awkward but maybe it will help you guys too if you face the same problems.

Heh, what would WR look like with 750 people on? I don't even think there were that many people on at peak times on the live server (the name of which I no longer remember) that I played on.

Because of the way the game is designed and its current population (faster leveling, lots of low levels, /ooc) the server always seems to be bustling and busy when compared to my old smaller eqlive server in my opinion...
