Paladin / Racial Traits?

Hello everyone! This is my first post and my 2nd day in game. I've been playing EQ for almost 3 years. My main has always
been a DORF PALLY. Now since I am new, I don't really know what I should be making. I looked over the pluses and
minuses of each race and Human looked the most appealing with the 5% leveling XP and the 10% Skill Learning Rate. As
for the Dwarves...Infravision, +35% Fear Resistance, 50 Mining. I don't know anything about fearing in this game. In live,
it wasn't too much of a problem ever and mining? I never remember mining in live... so I need to know how these things
would affect my choice for race. She's only level 4, but I would be happy to remake her after considering suggestions. Also
feel free to post about the other races for Paladin choice. Oh,and also please consider and mention racial gear/equipment.
Thanks a lot :brow: (overwhelmed with new game)

Speaking as a high elf paladin, if i had to do it all over agian id probably go with either dwarf or halfling, they have great stats for a paladin imo. The fact that high elves start out with something like 65 str kept me encumbered for the first 40 or so levels, people that play barbs, ogres and trolls really dont notice it as much but i have to be almost monk-like in my attention to how much stuff weighed and how far it would drop my agi. Also if youre following your group somewhere, they allways have to stop and wait for you cause youre encumbered. Its a real headache.

Stats STR STA AGI DEX WIS INT CHA
Dwarf 100 95 70 90 88 60 55
Erudite 70 75 70 70 88 107 80
Froglok 80 85 100 100 80 75 60
Gnome 70 75 85 85 72 98 70
Half Elf 80 75 90 95 65 75 85
Halfling 80 80 95 90 85 67 60
High Elf 65 70 85 70 100 92 90
Human 85 80 75 75 80 75 85

Going by that chart for stats, id have to say that dwarves are the best statistically for a Paladin, followed by humans and frogs. Personally i cant stand any of those models really, and the human's lack of any kind of night vision is very daunting to a noob w/o access to any kind of night-vision spell or even a lightstone.

the +50 mining dwarves get is used in conjunction with blacksmithing (like in WoW) , so its a nice boost you get there. If you never plan to tradeskill, then its of no real importance to you at all really.

The +5% bonus the humans get isnt really that big of a deal, i box a troll shaman with my highelf paladin and they are pretty much even as far as xp is concerned in the middle 40's. If you think about it, 5% is only another blue bar of xp anyway, not like back in regular EQ where it was a 20% penalty(a whole bubble).

In the end, id reccommend just picking the toon that you want to look at for the next several months. :)

Pallies get a style here that renders them immune to charm, mesmerize, and fear I believe if that helps. Dwarfs have nice starting stats and half elves arent too shabby. In the end though your starting statistics probably wont make too much of a difference as there is alot of + stat gear out there and AA's to raise stats. Basically I would tell you just to make whatever race/class combo you would enjoy the most as that is the most important thing.

For example I have a High Elf Pally and even though his fighting statistics suck (he does get more mana at least), I still enjoy playing him just because it is somewhat of a challenge and I wanted to be a stuck up prick from a roleplaying perspective :D

Pick the one that has thde model you like the most. This game is not about crunching numbers.

Not to say it SHOULD be about crunching numbers, but who is anyone to dictate what others may enjoy about the game. Some people REALLY enjoy min/maxing and crunching numbers... let 'em. Some people REALLY enjoy the midlevel game and hate the 1-25 game, love 26-55 or so, and then don't like the end game again... others live to raid and rush up as fast as possible... everyone enjoys the game differently...

Dwarves make the best Paladins. Hands down. Period. Its just the way it is. Its a cosmic absolute.

The 50 mining for dwarves isn't really there. It's listed as a racial trait, but it's not in the game.

Infravision and the resistance to fear are the only real one traits.

Thanks for your replies guys! I don't care about the number crunching as a Dwarven
Pally has alwayse been my favorite. I just wanted to know your opinions about those
little extras here that live doesn't have (resist against fear, mez, etc) Since I don't know
this server yet, I don't really know which of those racial traits are more important for
a pally.

Well, i can tell you now that it would be best to stop comparing SoD to live :) Content on SoD is all custom and almost everything is very different from live. Mobs, items. etc etc. As such, Mining is one of those features that we have on SoD but that doesnt even exist on live. If you are a fan of tradeskilling then it might me a nice idea to start with 50 mining, because it will help you a lot with gathering ore's for blacksmithing. I personally believe it's kinda silly to look at the wall of a cave all day in hopes to find some ore :)

Anyway, have fun on SoD!

I'd say a Dwarf is a safe bet for a Paladin, all number crunching aside - it depends primarily upon your own personal playstyle. Do you like to lead the charge in a battle, or do you prefer to serve a more protective role in your groups? A Dwarf can be counted on to stand firm (fear resistance can be helpful), whereas something like a High-Elf wouldn't do as well on the front lines, but has a higher emphasis on spell use and magical protection (charm immunity).

Also, welcome to the server :)

Hi!

I have both a dwarf pally and dwarf cleric I play. Simply because I have always liked Dwarfs. I never really worried about the traits. The most important one to me however is the fact that he is short... Tall races feel like I am runnin slow! (I know its the same speed)
Gnomes would be my second choice if no dwarf available ;)

Aside from all that... Please look me up in game either Friday nite or on the weekend.
Tharic and Ghim are my toons. I am a friend of Clint. (who I beleive told you about this game)

Tharic

doubt

When in doubt go gnome... you cant lose .......I mean a gnome .......soo cute ......so .....welll

Go gnome

Sidenote: I play an Iksar Necro and right now I am level 58. Right now I don't feel that I should've played Dark Elf or even Erudite, the only thing I slightly notice is that Humans will level faster than me.
Besides that...if you think Dwarf Paladin is great from RP style go for it. But I don't think you would go less good with half elf or High elf.
Your choice is not from numbers it is from what you like :)

Dwarf has the best stats but halfings hold the best agro, humans lvl the fastst
dwafs have th best stats, haflings next, humans next

that's how I see it
If you want to be as tankly as you can be, go dwarf, if you wanna farm up AA's go human (just 5% means' u'll be 65 instead of 63 at the same time), If you wanna be pretty tankly and hold the best agro go hafling.
