Packet Loss During /Who all

Whenever I type the /who all command, I receive massive packet loss causing my a lot of the results to be missing. I have test 3 different ISPs, this happens on 2 of them. Does anyone know what ports this game uses that I can check with my ISP and see if they block it? Or have any suggestions for what would be causing this?

Thanks

I have never heard of this bug before. Does it still happen with the new server?

I have had this happen before randomly, but I just do a /who again and it is works correctly again. Sometimes it takes 1 or 2 times to get the full list but at least for me it doesn't happen all that often (read: MAYBE once a month). From my experiences, it seems it is just a lag problem. Haven't used the new server yet so I can't comment on that.

For me this happens every time, and I never get the full list. I just tried it with the new server and the same thing happens. A single /who all results in instant 35% packet loss and if I spam it I can get it past 60%. This happens on all PCs in my house, and the same at another location with a separate ISP. Although when I use a Verizon MIFI device I do not get the packet loss at all. My internet speed are roughly 3Mb/512Kb, the second location is roughly 15Mb/5Mb. If there are only a few results I tend to see them all, but when there is a large amount in the /Who, like all or a guild with lots on I get the packet loss everytime.

Hmm, that's a little strange. It's an expensive operation really, so I'd have to look more into it. Honestly, part of me says this is probably better in the 2.5 client, so it might be a case of waiting for that, but it doesn't hurt for me to see if there's anything obvious.

To bump an old post, we still get this. We also get it when checking listsolds or I've noticed PL when using warrior stance commands. The odd thing is I'll see on my other computer that the stance does get used (I don't see on the comp I'm playing warrior that he does Whirlwind or Rampage) along with I do not see everything that a character is selling when checking their listsolds. It's really annoying to try and buy something specific off of a listsold.

I have always gotten the same thing on my home computer. If someone has 20 items for sale on listsold, I will only be able to see roughly the first half of them. Same for /who all commands; if there's a raid going on in like PoFrost and I try to see who's there, a third of the lines of names just don't show up nor does the "There are 18 players in x" message at the end.

It also happens in combat, especially if I use my WW stance and am proccing a lot. Even in regular single target combo it's pretty common for me to not get random things like my combo messages, enrage/ramp messages, etc. It also is worse when I box; whichever client is the first into a zone works almost normally but my second client has almost perma PL anytime both characters are in combat.

I am hopefully getting a new ISP in a week and ditching this shitty DSL, hopefully that fixes it for me.

Run a ping to the server at the same time you take action(/who). Does the ping produce the same results? (or is ICMP blocked?)

This will tell you if the loss is occurring IN the application itself or not.

Running a ping test while doing /who has no effect. Lose no packets when doing a ping to 184.107.119.101, which I have been told is the server, but still massive loss in game doing /who.

Losing items during a listing is a symptom of UDP packets getting dropped. This is the same phenomenon that causes the zone "crashes" - you miss a packet and the client just never moves.

I *think* this is better in the new client. At least I hope so.

If there is anything I can do to minimize this issue? any help would be greatly appreciated. Although I have played SoD since 2006 and this has only been an issue in the last year or so. Rarely had packet loss before this. Don't crash on zone very often either. To clarify, the "loss" is for pretty much most communications in game. From /who, quest dialog, /listsold, battlespam, etc.

And I did load into 2.5 and tested the listsold which worked perfectly, but I was the only one on the server at the time. Hoping there can be something I can do.

Get WireShark, run several captures while performing /who all or /cm listsold 'name'. Label them and find the deltas. https://www.wireshark.org/

Similar to parsing DPS.....the actions I mean.

When you do a /listsold and get a complete list, compare that to a capture with an incomplete list and see what happened. You'll get what's mentioned above by Taryth, most likely. UDP packet drop/loss.

On another note think about this. I like other players don't have this issue. So, first place to troubleshoot is your personal situation. Your system/OS/Network connection (wireless/wired with RJ-45/PoE)/ISP (how many hops to the SoD servers and what does the round trip icmp latency look like).....

No, I have this exact same issue.

And I literally never get a full /who or listsold result. If somebody has 20 items for sale, I could sit there all day and never see more than half of the items, same with /who all for any zone with a 18+ people. Certain script-heavy fights are troublesome, same with using whirlwind stance on susvain when I've pulled a lot of mobs and am proccing a lot.

Unfortunately it looks like I'm stuck with my DSL at my current location, I tried using a free VPN but couldn't connect to it for some reason, maybe I'll try that again.

Have to be a little careful - ISPs can de-prioritize ICMP, making it a shaky metric in some cases.

As for mitigating it, people have suggested TCP-based VPNs have helped.

I can promise you NOTHING has changed on the network code side. That code is awful and it's risky to touch even a single line of it. While I can certainly have our folks double check with our ISP, I'm not sure that's going to get us much. The best thing is to pray for our souls and hope we can get 2.5 out sooner rather than later. :)

Faster internet = less likely to miss a UDP packet. Doesn't mean having a T3 line will guarantee it doesn't happen but it will help. I've noticed things like boxing, audio chat programs etc will increase the chances of zone crashes/who all latency.

Maybe that's why I never have issues. 50Mb down and 10Mb up with my ISP.....(NOT consistent, but my up and down is fast...very fast)
