Original spell graphics

Is there any way to get them back in? I still have my original CD to pull the files off of...

A little while after SOE started messing with the spell effects and replacing them with grade Z graphics I was able to get the old ones back on. I hadn't been using the new spell graphics for long but I was stunned at how much better looking the old ones were.

So is it possible to get them back in and if so when? :D

PLEASE! Old school bolt spells for teh win!!!!!!!!

Honestly, if this could be done easilly, or given as an option, I would LOVE it.

It's not like we're running P200's with Voodoo2 cards anymore...

You get 2 of those spells going off in your field of vision and it'll lag like a mofo no matter what you're using. I remember the old EQ spells. They were graphic HOGS. The new ones are as well, but reducing the opacity and density of them helps lots.

If it's not a lot of work, I'm all for people having the option of going with the old effects if they like. Me personally, I liked the new ones better. I remember when they came into the game and I was like "Wow...the leaves flying around looks really cool!" :)

hehehee I remember with the old graphics getting the food summoning bracer (15 second cast or so) and doing..

Over and over so the spell effects all stacked ontop of eachotehr and looked really really cool but pretty much froze everyone who saw it up :D

You should have added a poll to this thread to see who wants old spell effects, who wants to keep new, and who doesnt care either way... Maby if we got enough votes Wiz would change it.

I would vote for Old Spell Effect, in my opinion they are much better. :D

I don't know if this will necessarily work... But when you first load up the CD's, copy and paste all the spell effects in a new folder out of the EQ folder. Patch to EQLive as you normally do before using the WR patcher. And once that is done (make another new folder for the new files and Copy/paste them to it as a backup folder if this goes wrong), copy and paste all the previous 'spell' files that you copied earlier and overwrite them. I don't know but it might work. The worse that happens is that you just copy/paste all the files again...

Im pretty sure this would not work, i think the WRPatcher would just overwright the old spell files and replace them with the ones you need to play WR. But maby im wrong i dont know these things half as well as i pretend to.

I think that might have been what I did. This was a long time ago but I think there was two ways to do it. One was you used the patcher to download the latest files then used some kind of shortcut to bypass the patcher the next time you ran EQ. That might violate WR's terms though because I think they always want you to run the patcher before you play.

I just know at one time there was some way of doing it. Something else I remember is the necros over at eqclasses.com figured out how to get the original red skele model back in as the pet model.

I installed my original Everquest CD but I wasn't sure which file has the spell graphics on it. I'd like to hear from one of the devs on whether or not this is possible. I think it'd be great and the option's always there to turn down the particle effects or remove them completely. I also have my original SoV CD with the "2.0" interface if that would help.

The mp3 music of EQLive was the same way. If you changed the files before you patched, the patcher would overwrite the files and you would have to listen to what they wanted you to hear.

But... If you patched first THEN overwrite the files, you would have the music you wanted to listen too. But of course once you exited the game and played later, you would have to repeat the same proceedure again... But it worked. So if the WRPatcher would overwrite the files, just simply paste them after the WRPatcher is done, prior to clicking "Play".

Again, the worse that happens is that you just replace the files...

Well I did some fiddling around and here's what happened. I deleted the Spell Effects folder and kept a copy on the desktop. I ran the WR patcher and it didn't try to patch them back in. But when I went into the game I had no spell effects all. Just the casting sound effects.

I haven't been able to figure out which file on the original EQ CD contains the spell effects.

Just to test to see if they are on the CD, I ran the tutorial(the original offline tutorial, old schoolers will probably remember it) and sure enough the old cleric nuke/lightning spell effect was in there.

So what I need to know is which file has the spell graphics on it and if it will work with the updated client.

Try checking the disk to see if they have a folder you can open and copy... Its been a while since I touched the discs..

Its good to see that they are present though.. Good luck!

Well I'm at a loss here. I have the original EQ installed and can't find any files that look like they have the spell graphics on them. Plus I suspect the spdat.eff now looks for files in the new Spell Effects folder when you cast spells.

Something else is when you install the old EQ CD it gives you the option to install the intro movie. I did but it doesn't show the movie until you launch the game after patching. For some reason SOE decided to not let you view the intro movie at all in later patches. The movie is on an XMI file and I haven't been able to find any programs that let you view files with that extension in WMP.

Sucks hehe I can't get my nostalgia fix either way.

I'm not an EQ program expert, but I seem to remember that when they put in the new spell graphics, they changed the client/program to some extent to use the newer spell effect files. I don't think the older client/program had the spell effects split out into seperate files, but it was encoded in some other dat file or in the application. Thus it may not be possible to go back to the old graphics without going back to an older client... You might want to check with the EQemu guys.

Thought I'd revive this post as a friend of mine (Grimar, you rock man), has told me how to enable old spell effects, and it works a charm.

Remove (backup somewhere) spellsnew.eff from the root game directory.

Enjoy, (thanks again Grim, you THA MAN!).

Edit: Some piccies;

Also, if you do make use of this, please take the time to thank Grimar in-game if you see him :)
