Noob type wizard questions

On live I never got anywhere near a wizard. I thought they'd be kinda fun to play here, but I find myself a bit confused.

1) I've got yellow and red spell gems. What are the differences between the tan, blue and green gems? I thought they were area effects, but I've been trying to use "Frost spiral of something" which is green and it's only hitting one target.

2) I've got different spells that do alot of damage for a lot of mana or a small amount of damage for a small amount of mana. How do you know when is good to use which?

3) It seems like there are *no* quests for wizards. Just the newbie one to make my little ice cream cone. Are there some around I'm missing?

Thanks in advance

The spells with red gems are targetted spells, they affect the npc you have targetted. the green ones are targetted AoE, they hit the mob targetted and the area around it(including you). the blue ones are PBAoE, they hit the area around you(excluding you). the tan ones (yellow you mean?) are self only spells. the purple ones are group/raid wide spells

Your second question is depending on the situation, for most situations the nukes that do the best ratio of damage/mana are the best, but there are some situations where you need very fast damage where you might could sacrifice getting low on mana for a larger amount of damage.

I recall there being a quest for a low level staff at the newport caster guild, but i didnt do many quests at lower levels when i made my wizard.

As for question #3:

There is a thread in the tome of knowledge that discusses class newbie quests. Ah, here it is:

Please note that this only includes quests you get at the guilds, not class specific quests gotten in other places or generic city quests. :)

(Generally, progressive questline is the "best" and no quests the "worst")

I will keep this list up to date as more are added.

PROGRESSIVE QUESTLINES:

Warrior - Grobb Guild, Newport Guild, Underhill Guild
Paladin - None
Cleric - Newport Guild
Ranger - None
Shadowknight - Grobb Guild
Druid - None
Monk - Newport Guild, Grobb Guild
Bard - Newport Guild
Rogue - Halas Guild, Newport Guild, Oggok Guild
Shaman - Grobb Guild
Necromancer - Newport Guild, Grobb Guild
Wizard - Sadri Malath Guild, Erudin Guild
Magician - Erudin Guild
Enchanter - Erudin Guild
Beastlord - Grobb Guild, Halas Guild

SINGLE/FEW QUESTS:

Warrior - Oggok Guild, Halas Guild
Cleric - Underhill Guild, Erudin Guild
Paladin - Erudin Guild, Newport Guild, Underhill Guild
Ranger - Surefall Guild
Shadowknight - None
Druid - Surefall Guild
Monk - None
Bard - None
Rogue - None
Shaman - Halas Guild
Necromancer - None
Wizard - Newport Guild, Oggok Guild
Magician - Newport Guild, Oggok Guild
Enchanter - Newport Guild, Oggok Guild
Beastlord - None

So there you have it. Check out the Erudin and Sadri Malath Wizard guilds for progressive quest lines, and Newport and Oggok guilds for individual quests.

Yellow spell gems are self target only spells.

Tan spell gems are rain spells i.e hit the target enemy and 1 extra enemy close to it for 3 waves of damage over 3 ticks.. Your spellwill also hit you if you are too close to your target and it will hit your group or raid if the spell is reflected.

Thank you for the help.
If I may point out a new source of my confusion. At level 8 I got "Fingers of Fire", which has a purple gem. According to what y'all just said that should be group based, but it is actually a player based AoE.
So, it this a glitch or am I still confused?

Thanks

It's like a navy blue color, and those are pbAoE's. - Point Blank Area of Effect spells.

... I think.

Yeah, as a wizard I think that the only group spell you're even going to get will be the relic combat proc, which is raidwide, your blue nukes are pbAoEs.

edit: oh i guess your ports are purple but wtf do I know
