Newport Ring Quest IIIB

This request is in regards to the Newport Ring Sidequest at part IIIB, when you are presented with the choice of being corrupt and helping Maltar Crow, or rejecting his proposition.

In a nutshell, the three choices are:
A) Accept his bribe, and lie to the guard about smuggled goods coming in
B) Accept the bribe, but don't say anything
C) Reject the bribe and alert the guard about it

As a member of the rogue's guild, I naturally chose the first choice -- however, to my dismay, I took an Evil alignment hit and increased 1% on the Evil axis.

My suggestion is: remove the Evil alignment factor from choice A. None of these choices revolve around Good and Evil, but rather Law and Chaos. Had the bribe revolved around poisoning a water supply, or supplying citizens to the Cult of Entropy, I could see an Evil dimension involved...but this is not the case.

Dev thoughts?

Lying to guards isnt evil?

Its definitely chaotic, but.. im pretty sure its evil to. I dont think evil is defined solely by a purely heinous and monumental act, such as you have listed.

You're right, it does not have to be defined by the example I gave, but I would argue that using one's position to help out the rogue guild (and earn coin for oneself as well) is not an inherently evil thing - granted, my opinions about what Evil should be don't matter here, but take a look at what other choices in SoD will give you Evil points:

-helping the Thug dominate directly at the victim's expense in the Dream
-doing the Newport Necro guild quests, which along the way has you killing citizens, paladins, etc, -doing the Grobb gate neck quest (i think?) which involves killing,
-doing the Blackscale faction quests where the professed goal of Blackscale is to dominate, kill, take over
-crushing the woman's hopes in snp by maliciously lying to her about the whereabouts of her husband/son (antique plate quest)

On the other hand, look at chaotic points: stealing from houses, stealing from banks, lying, etc; these actions are also taken at the expense of other people, but don't involve in domination or direct harm

I'm not arguing that the choice can't both be chaotic AND evil; but it seems to me that because it's in your face chaotic, and not (at least to me) so obviously evil that it should either be given a more evil twist in the dialogue, or have its Evil alignment points removed. Again, the choice of taking the bribe and lying to the guards is certainly not a good choice, but who is being harmed directly? who's being dominated? no one at all, which is why I say the choice is inherently a chaotic choice, while not inherently evil.

Another thing: there's Corporal Larun in Newport, and he also lies to the Newport Guard; in his case, however, he's covering up the murder of innocent citizens by necromancers. This is the sort of lie that is Evil; by contrast, I'll reiterate my argument saying that in the case of Newport Ring IIIB, lying to the guard about smuggled goods is not Evil in that it does not involve domination, nor does it involve direct harm to the well-being of others

And seriously, what is a rogue character supposed to do? Turn down an ally of the guild? There is no Evil hit for stealing from a bank, nor is there an Evil hit for pickpocketing, or nicking from peoples' homes -- so why have an Evil hit for smuggling

EVIL: Selfishness, pettiness, and antipathy. The Other Obvious One. While the dark elf necromancer who sings all day about death and skeletons is likely to be EVIL, that's not the essence of EVILness. Rather, EVIL refers to a simpler, more abstract notion of morality that is commonly referred to as 'being a jerk'. EVIL tends to be a failure to follow the tenants of one of the actual branches of morality, sometimes accompanied by a 'might makes right' notion--for example, Kaezul's forces believe in a flavor of social selection pressure/Darwinism, where the weak are left to fend for themselves such that the overall whole might be stronger. However, most of the time EVIL is simply what you want to do when you should do something else. Walking past the homeless without making eye contact, stealing from people (distinguished from CHAOS), acting only for self-interest, and even an unkind word can all be EVIL.

According to this, yeah it is a little bit evil. So should be stealing from homes and pick-pocketing. It would be nice to know the devs use a logical method to determine the quantity of evil points awarded by different quest.

If that is the staff's take on EVIL -- then okay! But while that may be the theory, it isn't the practice in SoD for reasons I already stated (bank theft, pickpocketing, etc don't give EVIL points).

Pretty much agree with Wesell
