New way of looking at rings.

I'm not exactly sure if this is in the right forum, but here's an idea I had while I was at work today.

I realize this is a pretty drastic idea, because of the changes it would require, but the concept is rather simple.

Why only two rings slots for characters? Why not six? Ten?

Well, basically, you CAN have ten rings, if you make rings as an augment for the Hands Slot.

Well, I know this leaves the problem of the actual ring slots in the character window. Well, considering augments are less powerful than items to begin with, you could make regular rings for the ring slot. These rings could be like the signet rings that the nobility wore centuries ago. Rings that actually go into the ring slot could be augmentable themselves in a more realistic way.

I think it would be awesome to be able to customize your equipment like this. Instead of just being able to screw around with the item iteself by adding an item like "A RETARDED ROCK OF AUGMENTATION", you could augment your boots by adding an anklet or your cap by adding a feather.

Basically the change I suggest means augmentations aren't simpy to make items better/uber, but instead, to wear a set of Goggles on your gnome bu augmenting your mask.

Just a thought.... maybe its not that big of a change, but I'd be all for it.

The issue you run in to is you just added 10 (or 20?) ring slots to the gloves. Thats a heck of a stat boost for anyone.

It's a very big change, but an interesting RP-based idea bound within the current item system.

Just adding in something else, because your idea has me thinking: Jewelcrafting. The tradeskill changes to both the metalcrafting of rings, earrings, and necklaces with different slots and gemcutting. Gemstones can be worked with different tools to create both small and large size gems. Skill level determines quality, quality determines stats. A low level jewelcrafter will create something of poor quality with minor benefits (i.e. silver jewelry currently) while those who have honed their skill will create flawless gems. The actual rings, earrings and amulets themselves will hold the current base augments (Slot 3, the main quest augment) as a large central gem while better quality (Platinum rings, Golden necklaces) will have slots for both small and large sized gems. Perhaps enchanted metals used to make these items will have some base benefits on top of the augments.

can't do it i believe due to coding. you can add aug slots, but you can't make augs rings althought i might be wrong

Wearing more than one magical ring per hand negates the effect of the magical rings.

Which, interestingly, can be used to easily negate cursed rings in Dungeons and Dragons games.

well, you just make an augement with a ring graphic and make a special augment slot for rings only

it would be a big pain in the butt to make so many changes, but you could also take the time to upgrade/overhaul jewelcrafting as suggested above.

This will almost certainly not go in. Why would we rebalance every ring in the game to 1/10th of its power and add 900% more rings to the game? That's a lot of work for no reason.

no reason says you :p

yeah, i realize its a bunch of trouble and there's nothing to gain except realism and customization, but I would prefer it my way to yours, obviously, or I wouldn't have proposed it

adding ten rings in place of the current two would require rings to be redone to be one fifth as powerful. Everything is balanced around being able to use only two rings. Adding the extra slots would add "realism" at the copst of gameplay, not to mention a great amount of the devs' time.

I do like the gem augging idea though. That would be pretty nice, even if only for a center stone. Jc'ing would also maybe gain some use outside chanters as well.
