Good plan 
I find that some classes are pretty simple and boring to play, but some of them are complex enough that you never even have a spare moment anyway. In other words, if I was playing a melee character, then I usually like to have a second character too, not just to heal him but to give me something to hold my attention. But if I am playing a Necromancer or something, then I am happy to just play it by itself because there is so much you can do.
